U-19 County semi-final v Belmullet match report

Davitts 5-17  Belmullet 5-3

Davitts had the benefit of home advantage in the County U-19 Division 2 semi-final against Belmullet and they made it count, defeating the visitors by a flattering fourteen point margin. The scoreline might suggest otherwise but the match outcome was in fact very much in the balance until the final few minutes, before Davitts scored three late goals to book their place in the County final against Knockmore.

After the two sides shared the opening four points in the first five minutes, with Niall Treacy and Zack Keadin on target for Davitts, the homeside took a firm grip on the game with Fenton Kelly and Cathal Corless in dominant form at midfield. They added points from Niall Treacy (3), Zack Keadin and Jack Melvin before Niall Treacy goaled in the 13th minute to put his side seven points ahead. Belmullet replied with a 14th minute goal to stem the tide. Davitts points from Niall Treacy (2), Jack Melvin and Jack Trench extended Davitts lead but another Belmullet goal in the 24th minute kept them in touch. Niall Treacy kicked the last score of the half, a 30th minute point, to leave Davitts ahead by 1-12 to 2-2 at the interval.

Belmullet opened the second half scoring with a 31st minute point but Davitts replied with two similar scores from Cathal Corless and Jack Devane in the next two minutes. Two Belmullet goals in the 37th and 44th minutes sandwiched a Zack Keadin point leaving just four points between the teams at the second water break.

A fine Cathal Corless point was followed by a second Niall Treacy goal but Belmullet grabbed a fifth goal in the 50th minute to leave five points separating the sides. Davitts finished the game with a flourish. Niall Treacy pointed after a superb run in the 52nd minute and substitute Finn McLoughlin justified his introduction with two cracking goals in the 58th and 62nd minutes before Jack Melvin converted a 63rd minute penalty just before the full time whistle.

Davitts had eyecatching performances from Brian Og McTigue, Tomas Ronayne, Brian Birmingham, Cathal Corless, Fenton Kelly, Niall Treacy, Jack Melvin, Zack Keadin and Finn McLoughlin.
