U-16’s v Claremorris – South Mayo U-16 “A” Semi-Final
Davitts and Claremorris served up a cracker of a match in the South Mayo U-16 A semi-final, played in Garrymore on Wednesday evening. In a titanic struggle, Davitts got the better of their close rivals, on a 4-7 to 4-4 scoreline. Davitts were the better team in the first half and led by 3-3 to 1-3 at half time, with two fine Shane Cummins goals and another via midfielder Donie Ronayne.
Andrew Peters, superb in the second half, added a point but Claremorris began to eat into the lead and the sides were level with 15 minutes remaining, with two excellent goals by their explosive full forward Mikey Lavelle, who ended up with a personal tally of 3-1. Davitts finished the stronger with points from Peters(2) and the tireless Tommy Waldron, before Peters scored a brilliant individual goal. Brendan Walsh scored from the penalty spot with virtually the last kick of the game to leave three points separating the teams in the end.
While all the team played well, Davitts had exceptional performances from William Freeley and Gerard McWalter in defence, midfielders Donie Ronayne and John Macken (a contender for man of the match with Peters) and Andrew Peters, Shane Cummins (up to his withdrawl through injury) and Tommy Waldron in attack.
