South Mayo Minor C’ship v Carras match report
Carras 3-4 Davitts 4-8
Davitts minor team made the short journey to Garrymore on Tuesday evening and qualified for the South Mayo B final after a good win over the local side.
Davitts, playing with the wind in the first half, opened the scoring with a first minute point from Aaron O Dea. The next score was an equalising point for Carras in the 12th minute but this score was immediately cancelled out by Ciaran Treacy. Davitts points from Ronan Kelly (2) and Aaron O Dea extended the lead to four and in the 26th minute, Dylan Gormley fired home a super goal, after great work by Tadhg Feerick and Dylan Burke, to put seven points between the sides. Carras were reeling but they responded in impressive fashion with a well-worked goal a minute later. A fine Ciaran Treacy goal, after a brilliant pass from Ronan Kelly, was the final score of the first half and saw Davitts lead by 2-5 to 1-1 at the break.
Dylan Gormley pointed in the first minute of the second half and when Ciaran Treacy slotted his second goal, after a fine move in the 34th minute, things looked very bleak for the home-side. Not for the first time though, they replied in the best way possible with a goal of their own thirty seconds later. Ciaran Treacy shot a 42nd minute point for Davitts but when the locals scored their third goal in the 46th minute and a 48th minute point, the deficit was cut to five points. A brilliant Ciaran Treacy point in the 51st minute saw Davitts go six up but two similar Carras scores narrowed the gap to four with five minutes remaining. Davitts sub Fionn McTigue fired home a great goal in the 57th minute to finally seal the win and a place in the South final.
Dylan O Brien could not be faulted for any of the Carras goals and he pulled off a crucial save towards the end of the match. Tadhg Feerick had a tremendous game at corner back with Ben Corless equally tigerish in the other corner. Noah O Brien, the superb Conor McDermott and Aaron O Dea (0-2) formed a very impressive half-back line. The hard-working Dylan Burke and Burke Briere gave Davitts a distinct edge at midfield. Aaron CB’s strong running caused all sorts of problems for the Carras defence with Sean Clarke, Ronan Kelly (0-2) and Dylan Gormley (1-1) making telling contributions but in Ciaran Treacy (2-3), Davitts had a real match-winner who was a constant threat. Fionn McTigue (1-0) and Cillian Kearns did very well when introduced while Pearse Diskin also saw action in the closing moments.
