South Junior B Final v Garrymore match report
Davitts 2-7 Garrymore 3-14
The South Mayo Junior B Final was held in Ballindine on Wednesday evening. After a tight and entertaining first half, with Davitts leading by a point at the break, Garrymore looked to their powerful bench and the introduction of some strong players swung the game firmly in their favour.
Davitts led by a point at the first water break, 1-2 to 0-4, with defenders Micheal Hett and Donie Ronayne getting the points and Brian Clarke finishing for the goal after a well worked move involving Padraig Mangan, Fearghal McGrath and Fenton Kelly. Garrymore tagged on four points in the second quarter but a second Brian Clarke goal, after great work by the tireless Danny Corless and Fearghal McGrath, and a point from Fearghal McGrath, saw the homeside ahead by 2-3 to 0-8 at halftime.
Garrymore dominated long periods of the second half and they outscored Davitts by 3-6 to 0-4 in this period (one of the goals would hardly have been allowed if there was a VAR to rule on square balls!). Fenton Kelly, Fearghal McGrath, Cathal Hennelly and Jamie Mullee got the second half points for the homeside. Indeed it was great to see the return to action of Cathal Hennelly who has been sidelined for six weeks with a knee injury and he played well when introduced in the second half.
Davitts would have been delighted with the first half display, all the players performing well and playing with great spirit. They fought valiantly to the end of the game but Garrymore’s firepower off the bench proved to be the difference between the sides.
