Seniors v Westport – Match Report
Westport 0-12 | Davitts 2-9
Davitts will have bitter sweet memories of this Senior Championship clash in Westport on Saturday evening. While the win puts them safe from the dreaded relegation play-off’s, missing out on a quarter final spot by a one point score difference is hard to take, but a serious head injury to the talismanic Paul Carey early in the game should bring all things into the proper prospective.
Westport, playing with the wind in the first half, started well and had two points on the board before Davitts outstanding centre-back Keith Prendergast pulled one back. Michael Conroy exchanged points with Lewis Cawley before the incident with Carey. Davitts replied well with a fantastic Thomas Waldron goal, after a superb Liam Kearns pass in the 18th minute.
A late high hit on Davitts hugely impressive midfielder Ronan McNamara went unpunished by the officials and the homeside capitalised, winning a huge amount of midfield possession as McNamara struggled, and they scored six unanswered points to lead by 0-9 to 1-2 at halftime.
The second half belonged to a fired up Davitts side with Keith Prendergast, Colm Roche, Colm Boyle, Michael Conroy and a rejunevated Ronan McNamara in outstanding form. They began to play with a lot of passion as they got on top all over the field. Early points from McNamara, Prendergast and Conroy were followed by the score of the game. McNamara fielded superbly in the middle of the field and offloaded immedietly to Colm Roche who in turn spotted Keith Prendergast’s run from midfield. Prendergast passed to Michael Conroy who gave the Westport keeper no chance with an expertly taken finish.
Points from Conroy, Prendergast, Fearghal McGrath and McNamara ensured the Davitts victory, a well deserved one on their second half display.
Every Davitts player played their hearts out in this game and were a credit to the Club.
