Seniors v Charlestown – Match Report
Davitts 1-14 | Charlestown 1-12
Davitts and Charlestown staged a dress rehearsal for their Senior Championship clash next weekend in sunny Ballindine on Saturday evening, with the homeside edging the contest by two points, in this Div 1A League tie. If the Championship game is as good then the punters will go away happy as this game was played at a high tempo throughout with some excellent scores taken by both teams.
Andrew Peters opened the scoring with a first minute point. Charlestown midfielder Gareth O Donnell equalised a minute later. Michael Conroy, in top form throughout, and Colm Maye exchanged scores before Davitts captain Colm Roche put his side ahead in the 8th minute. Points from Maye (2), Joe McBrien and O Donnell put the visitors three up after 18 minutes. Conroy supplied five top class scores for Davitts in the next twelve minutes with a Maye point for Charlestown their only reply, to leave Davitts ahead by 0-8 to 0-7 at the interval.
As in the first half, Andrew Peters opened the second half scoring with a neat point. Points from Maye and Aaron Parsons tied the game after ten minutes. Two more Conroy scores and another from Maye left Davitts ahead by the minimum after 16 minutes. A minute later came the game’s crucial score. A superb move involving Ronan McNamara, Conroy and Peters was finished to the Charlestown net emphatically by Paul Carey. The tireless Matthew Trench extended the lead to five seconds later and it looked like Davitts were going to pull away. Charlestown had other ideas however. Damian Warde for the visitors and Fearghal McGrath for Davitts exchanged points but in the 28th minute, Charlestown were awarded a penalty which Maye despatched with ease and the gap was down to two points. In the remaining few minutes Charlestown tried to breach the Davitts defence again but they held firm to secure two valuable league points.
