Seniors v Breaffy – Match Report (Championship Rd. 1)

Breaffy 4-18 Davitts 0-9

Breaffy put on a powerful show at home to Davitts in the first round of the Mayo Senior football Championship on Saturday with a hugely impressive 21 points routing of Davitts. Davitts could never come to grip with the homeside’s intensity and physicality. They dominated midfield through Aidan O Shea and Brian Howley but were on top in almost every other sector throughout this one sided game.

Conor O Shea opened the scoring for Breaffy in the second minute and James Minogue goaled a minute later after some excellent work by Eddie Conroy. The very impressive Gareth Dunne and Conor O Shea pointed as the homeside went six points clear before Evan Ronayne and Cathal Hennelly pointed for Davitts in the 8th and 10th minutes. Conor O Shea and Cathal Hennelly traded points before Breaffy took complete control. Gareth Dunne netted another goal for the homeside in the 14th minute and points from Conor O Shea, James Minogue (2) and Seamus O Shea had Breaffy ahead by 2-8 to 0-3 at the interval.

Cathal Hennelly, Davitts best player, opened the second half scoring in the first minute and this was cancelled out by an Eimhin Morrin point a minute later. Ronan McNamara and Cathal Hennelly for Davitts and Breaffy’s Conor O Shea and Eddie Conroy all pointed before Aidan O Shea completely killed the game off with a 14th minute goal.

Ronan McNamara and Daire Morrin swapped points before Conor O Shea and two from Liam Irwin extended Breaffy’s lead with ten minutes remaining. Shane Treacy landed a Davitts point but Conor O Shea capped a fine personal display with a fourth Breaffy goal with five minutes remaining. The same player and Liam Irwin added points before the end with Cathal Hennelly getting Davitts sole reply.

On this performance, Breaffy look like a serious contender for the county title this year and had superb performers all over the field especially from Daire Morrin, James Minogue, the three O Shea brothers, Brian Howley, the ageless Gerry Jennings, Gareth Dunne and sub Liam Irwin.

Davitts will want to quickly forget this game and only Cathal Hennelly, Colm Boyle, Andrew Peters, Thomas Waldron and Evan Ronane played up to the required standard.
