Senior v Hollymount Carramore match report

Hollymount Carramore 2-14  Davitts 3-11

Davitts travelled to Hollymount on Sunday to take on Hollymount Carramore in Div 2B of the County Senior League and, after a classic ‘game of two halves’, the two sides shared the spoils after an enthralling encounter played in beautiful sunny conditions.

Davitts got the ideal start when they were awarded a penalty in the 3rd minute when Evan Ronane was fouled in the square after great work from Niall Treacy and Cathal Hennelly. Jack Ronayne converted the penalty with a confident strike. After Hollycarra pulled a point back a minute later, points from Fenton Kelly and Evan Ronane saw Davitts extend their lead to five points. The home side shot points in the 10th and 12th minutes before a classy Cathal Corless point in the 13th minute and a Dmitry Trench goal a minute later following a sweeping move put daylight between the sides.

Both sets of defences were being stretched with the forward play of a high quality. A 16th minute point for Hollycarra was followed by a goal in the 18th minute to peg back Davitts lead to two points. Two Hollycarra points were cancelled out by two similar scores from Colm Boyle and Cathal Corless before Cathal Hennelly finished a brilliant goal in the 28th minute. Keith Prendergast’s kickout fielded by Fenton Kelly and his long pass was caught by Niall Treacy who fed Hennelly and he struck the ball into the top corner of the net giving the Hollycarra keeper no chance. Cathal Hennelly pointed again just before the half time whistle to leave Davitts ahead by 3-7 to 1-6 at the break.

A fired up homeside got off to a blistering start in the second half and they shot an unanswered 1-2 in the opening three minutes. The impressive Davitts forwardline were relying on scraps now as Hollycarra began to dominate around the middle of the field. Niall Treacy pointed in the 38th minute after a great run but three points in a row for the homeside levelled the game with ten minutes remaining. Davitts lost Cathal Corless to a black card in the 48th minute and this didn’t help their cause. A long range Ronan McNamara point saw Davitts regain the lead but Hollycarra points in the 54th, 55th and 57th minutes put them in the driving seat and they looked poised to win. A Cathal Hennelly point in the 58th minute narrowed the gap to the minimum and Jack Ronayne saved the day for Davitts when he pointed a free in the second minute of injury time to tie a very entertaining match.

Outstanding for Davitts were the inspirational Colm Boyle, Thomas Ronayne, Fenton Kelly, Cathal Corless, Jack Ronayne, Niall Treacy, Cathal Hennelly and Evan Ronane.
