Senior League v Shrule Glencorrib match report
Shrule Glencorrib 1-8 Davitts 1-7
Shrule Glencorrib hosted Davitts in the first round of the Senior League Div 3 on Saturday evening and a goal deep into injury time snatched a victory for the home side. The game was played in difficult conditions with the wind and rain ensuring that good constructive football was at a premium.
Shrule Glencorrib led by 0-5 to 0-4 at the first water break with Patrick Keadin, Josh Ronayne, Shane Treacy and Fenton Kelly the Davitts scorers. Shrule Glencorrib added a point in the 22nd minute to extend their lead to two points but a superb Fenton Kelly goal in the thirtieth minute, set up by Jamie Mullee and Niall Treacy, left Davitts ahead by 1-4 to 0-6 at half time.
The second half was of very poor quality with both teams managing just three scores each as the conditions worsened. Points by Josh Ronayne and Fenton Kelly put Davitts three ahead at the second water break but the home side benefitted from a change of mind by referee Martin Walsh and his umpires, when they upgraded a clear wide to a point, a decision which left everyone bemused and left two points between the sides.
Evan Ronane scored a neat Davitts point in the 53rd minute and this was cancelled out four minutes later. Davitts had their chances to extend their lead but unforced errors were to haunt them as Shrule Glencorrib scored a goal at the death to grab the win.
Davitts will be extremely disappointed to lose this game but will need to focus on a home game with Lahardane next Sunday. Their best players against Shrule Glencorrib were Keith Prendergast, Patrick Keadin, Donie Ronayne, Tommy Waldron, Dmitry Trench, Fenton Kelly and Niall Treacy.
