Senior League Div 1B v Westport match report
Davitts 1-9 Westport 2-16
An impressive Westport side showed why they are top of Division 1B of the Senior League in Ballindine on Saturday evening, defeating the very young home side by ten points. Both sides were missing a number of key players but the strength in depth of the Westport squad will make them a formidable outfit in the Championship and they will be very hard to dislodge as County champions this year.
A 4th minute Alan Kennedy point for Westport was cancelled out by a 7th minute Dylan Gallagher score for the homeside but two more points from Kennedy and a well taken Finbar McLoughlin goal, after a defensive mix-up, in the 12th minute put the visitors five points clear. Niall Treacy, a constant menace in the Davitts attack, pulled a point back for the homeside in the 13th minute but Westport extended their lead with points from Alan Kennedy (3), Killian Kilkelly and Mark Moran with Dylan Gallagher hitting one back for Davitts, to leave Westport ahead by 1-8 to 0-3 at half time.
Niall Treacy opened the second half scoring with a first minute point for the hosts but a loose pass was pounced on by Eoghan McLoughlin who burst in from the left sideline before crashing home a superb goal to extend Westport’s lead to ten points in the 33rd minute and effectively kill off the game. Killian Kilkelly and Mark Moran added points as Westport threatened to run riot but Davitts replied with a 41st minute Dylan Gallagher point. Finbar McLoughlin for Westport and Davitts Liam Kearns exchanged points but two more well worked points from Westport’s Mark Moran and Killian Kilkelly put them thirteen ahead as the game entered the final quarter. A superb run from Niall Treacy set up Jack Melvin for a 47th minute goal for Davitts and Shane Treacy added a point in the 50th minute.
