Senior League Div 1A v Breaffy match report
Breaffy 3-11 Davitts 1-14
Breaffy hosted Davitts in the fourth round of the Senior League Div 1A on Friday evening and came out on top by three points after a fine game played in beautiful conditions.
Davitts set the early running and a first minute point by the lively Ciaran Treacy, a two-pointer from Jack Melvin in the 6th minute, a neat Tommy Waldron point a minute later and a second Ciaran Treacy score in the 11th minute saw Davitts five points ahead. Breaffy were enjoying plenty of possession but their shooting was very erratic. A Tommy O Reilly point in the 14th minute got them up and running and they quickly added added points from Joe Mellett and Conor O Shea to their tally before an 18th minute goal from Joe Mellett saw them take the lead. A 21st minute two-pointer from Jack Melvin put Davitts ahead again but Breaffy replied with a fine point from Conor Beirne in the 23rd minute. Ciaran Treacy for Davitts and the home-side’s Tommy O Reilly swapped points in the 25th and 26th minutes respectively. Jack Melvin and Ciaran Treacy pointed in the 27th and 28th minutes as Davitts went two ahead but Breaffy finished the half off well with a 29th minute Paul McDermott goal and a Conor O Shea point on the stroke of half-time giving them a 2-6 to 0-10 interval lead.
Breaffy were well on top in the third quarter and they extended their lead to five points with a Jack Livingstone two-pointer in the 34th minute and a brilliant Daire Morrin point in the 36th minute but Davitts were hanging on. After a scoreless eleven minutes, Jack Melvin pointed for Davitts in the 47th minute while a goal for Breaffy four minutes later, finished to the Davitts net by substitute Pierce Deane, just seconds after his introduction, seemingly put the home-side into the comfort zone. Davitts sub, Niall Treacy, making a welcome return from injury, had other ideas and he slotted home a clever goal in the 52nd minute as the tempo of the game lifted. Rory Martyn pointed for Breaffy in the 53rd minute but three unanswered Niall Treacy points in the 54th, 57th and 58th minutes reduced the deficit to just two points. Breaffy survived Davitts’ best efforts at an equaliser or a winner, and their towering midfielder, Niall Carter, had the last say with a 59th minute point.
Breaffy were best served by Jack Livingstone, Conor Beirne, Daire Morrin, Niall Carter, Oisin Tunney, Tommy O Reilly and Joe Mellett.
Davitts best were Cathal Higgins, Brian Birmingham, Tommy Waldron, Jack Melvin and the three Treacy brothers, Shane, Ciaran and Niall.
