Senior League 1A v Ballyhaunis match report
Ballyhaunis 3-9 Davitts 2-16
Davitts’ unbeaten start to their Senior League 1A campaign continued on Sunday when they overcame the challenge of Ballyhaunis after a right struggle. The game was played in glorious conditions in Ballyhaunis and although the hosts were missing a number of regulars, Davitts had to pull out all the stops to finally gain the upper-hand.
Ballyhaunis opened the scoring with a second minute point but two from Shane Treacy in the next three minutes put Davitts ahead. A Ballyhaunis goal in the seventh minute restored their lead but Davitts fired over four points through Jack Melvin, Niall Treacy, Fenton Kelly and Colm Boyle to lead by two after eighteen minutes. Ballyhaunis got a rub of the green in the 21st minute when a long range effort at a point ended up in the Davitts net as they took the lead again. Davitts responded with a fine Jack Melvin point after a great run to level the game. A 25th minute Ballyhaunis point was cancelled out by Niall Treacy two minutes later. The homeside struck for the last two points of the half as they went in ahead by 2-4 to 0-8 at the interval.
Davitts’ impressive midfielder Jack Melvin got the first score of the second period in the 32nd minute. Ballyhaunis pointed in the next minute but excellent play from Davitts’ Mark Birmingham and Fenton Kelly set up Melvin for a 34th minute goal as the lead flip-flopped again. Two points in the 37th and 39th minutes from Niall Treacy and Dylan Gallagher extended Davitts lead to three but Ballyhaunis would not lie down. They fired over two in the 40th and 43rd minutes. Niall Treacy got a Davitts point in the 45th minute but the homeside struck for their third goal in the 46th minute, taking advantage of some very poor Davitts defending, to take the lead again. Ballyhaunis extended their advantage to two points in the 50th minute but Davitts regained the lead through a brilliant Liam Kearns goal after super work from Charlie Phillips, Colm Boyle and Jack Melvin. Ballyhaunis equalised again in the 57th minute but Davitts added points from Liam Kearns, Shane Treacy and two superbly struck long range free kicks from man of the match Jack Melvin to clinch the win.
