Senior C’ship v Charlestown match report

Charlestown 1-12  Davitts 0-8

Charlestown proved too strong for a battling Davitts team in this Mayo Senior Championship match played in Ballyhaunis on Sunday. Davitts will now face Ballaghaderreen in a relegation play off next Saturday in Claremorris.

Niall Treacy opened the scoring with a Davitts point in the first minute but wind assisted Charlestown fired over five points in the next ten minutes before Evan Ronane registered Davitts second score in the 11th minute. Two Niall Treacy points narrowed the deficit to two points as Davitts enjoyed their best of the game in the second quarter. A 24th minute Charlestown point was cancelled out by a similar Niall Treacy effort a minute later and Davitts thought they had narrowed the gap to a single point when Ronan McNamara fired over a superb long range free kick but this was signalled wide by an umpire to the amazement of most of the large attendance. Charlestown got the final score of the half, a 32nd minute point, to lead by 0-8 to 0-5 at the break.

The play became much scrappier in the second half with quality football at a premium as the exchanges got more heated. Both sides were guilty of some poor shooting and Charlestown opened the second half scoring with a 37th minute point. They sealed the game in the 43rd minute with a Paul Towey goal, after he appeared to foul his marker Tomas Ronayne in the build. Cathal Corless pointed for Davitts a minute later but two more Charlestown points put them eight up. Cathal Corless hit two more Davitts scores and Charlestown got one before the end of the game which was threatening to boil over with both sets of players frustrated by referee Vincent Neary who has had better games.

Davitts had very good performances from Charlie Phillips, Tomas Ronayne, Jack Trench, Fenton Kelly, Cathal Corless and Niall Treacy.
