O Mara Cup v The Neale match report

The Neale 0-12  Davitts 2-5

Davitts travelled to Cong for the second Friday night in a row but this one was less rewarding, with the home side winning by a point to claim the two O Mara Cup points on offer. The game was a messy affair with poor ball handling the order of the day. With each of the three teams in the group winning one game, Davitts ended up on top on score difference and advance to the semi-final of the competition.

Davitts opened the scoring in the second minute when Stephen Nyland got on the end of a long Tommy Waldron delivery to flick the ball to the net past the advancing Neale goalkeeper. Davitts, already missing a few key players, were dealt a severe blow early on when their star forward Niall Treacy had to retire due to a serious facial injury. Three points from the locals in the 6th, 12th and 15th minutes levelled the game and after Ciaran Treacy pointed in the 18th minute, The Neale took the lead for the first time a minute later, scoring a long range free for two points. They extended that lead in the 23rd minute, a point that was cancelled out by Ciaran Treacy in the 30th minute. The Neale added another point in the 6th minute of stoppage time to leave them ahead at the break by 0-7 to 1-2.

The homeside extended their lead to three points in the first minute of the second half and Davitts replied through Ciaran Treacy two minutes later. The Neale pointed again in the 39th minute before Ciaran Treacy was on the receiving end of a rather crude foul in the 42nd minute resulting in Davitts being awarded a penalty kick. The penalty was well converted by Davitts captain Jack Melvin, to tie the game again. The Neale got the next two scores in the 46th and 48th minutes with Davitts replying with points from impressive sub Ronan Kelly in the 54th and 55th minutes. A Neale point with two minutes remaining swung the advantage in their favour.

Davitts best performers in a disappointing game were Cathal Higgins, Tommy Waldron, Stephen Nyland, Ronan Kelly and Ciaran Treacy.
