O Mara Cup v Hollymount Carramore match report
Davitts Senior’s travelled to Hollymount on Friday night to play the locals in the O Mara Cup and came with the two points after a lively and entertaining clash. The game ebbed and flowed throughout and it took a well taken point, from an advanced mark by substitute Keith Prendergast in injury time, to tip the balance in Davitts favour.
Davitts started off in fine style and shot two points in the first two minutes from Steve Nyland and Evan Ronane before HollyCarra got off the mark with a superb goal. They added a point in the 6th minute but points from Evan Ronane and Darragh McGale levelled the game. HollyCarra goaled again in the eighth minute and added a point to really rattle the visitors but Davitts replied with two Jack Ronayne points to leave the hosts ahead by three points at the much needed first half water break.
HollyCarra added two points to their tally in the 16th and 19th minute to stretch their lead to five points but a Jack Ronayne point and a classy Shane Treacy goal, after great work by Ronan McNamara and Darragh McGale, narrowed the gap to a point in the 22nd minute. The locals tagged on quickfire points in the 26th, 27th and 28th minutes and Jack Ronayne shot the last two points of the half to leave HollyCarra in front by 2-8 to 1-9 at halftime.
Both sets of defenders tightened up considerably in the second half as Davitts opened the scoring with points from Ronan McNamara and Jack Ronayne to level the match in the 35th minute. HollyCarra added four points and Davitts three before the second water break with Jack Ronayne (2) and Steve Nyland, two players that were in tremendous form all evening, on target for the visitors.
Jack Ronayne levelled the game again in the 52nd minute and Shane Treacy fired over in the 58th to put Davitts ahead for the first time since the second minute of the game. HollyCarra went back up the field to shoot the equaliser but Keith Prendergast had the final say with a point at the death.
This was a good workout for both teams before next weekend’s championship matches.
