New Junior C’ship v Ballina match report
Davitts had their first outing in the New Junior A Championship away to Ballina on Sunday. The home side were victors by 1-9 to 1-5, a late goal and point clinching the win. Both sides were guilty of some poor shot selection and shooting with Davitts probably the bigger culprits.
The sides were level at halftime, Ballina 0-5 to Davitts 1-2, with a tremendous individual goal by Liam Kearns just before halftime being the highlight. The same player and Liam Macken had got the two points but the attack squandered several good scoring chances.
Ballina scored three points with Liam Kearns getting two for Davitts before the second water break. Ballina doubled their lead to two points with five minutes remaining. Liam Kearns pointed in the 59th minute to leave the minimum between the sides but as Davitts threw everything into attack in the final minutes, Ballina broke and got a classic counter attacking goal to finish off the brave Davitts challenge.
The Davitts defence were superb throughout with Fionnan Gallagher outstanding. Tristan Diskin, Micheal Hett, Padraig Mangan, Shane Mitchell, Liam Macken , Danny Corless and Liam Kearns were best for Davitts in this game.
