Davitts 7-15 Garrymore 0-8
An understrength Garrymore junior team made the short journey to Ballindine to play Davitts in the Mayo Junior B championship on Friday evening and the home team proved much too strong in notching up their second win in the competition. Davitts will now play Crossmolina and a win would seal a place in the semi-finals.
Garrymore opened brightly and pointed in the first minute. Davey Hennessy scored Davitts points in the 5th and 7th minutes but a terrific two-pointer saw the visitors regain the lead in the 12th minute. This was as good as it was to get for Garrymore however as the home team began to turn the screw. Michael Conroy equalised the game a minute later and in the 17th minute Stephen Nyland scored Davitts first goal, spectacularly catching Tommy Waldron’s pinpoint delivery, before lashing an unstoppable left-footed drive to the top corner. Ronan Kelly and Davey Hennessy added points in the next two minutes before Hennessy, a constant thorn in the Garrymore defence, finished a slick passing move, involving Tom Corless, Dylan Burke, Darragh McGale, Michael Conroy and Danny Corless, to the net for his side’s second goal in the 20th minute. Three minutes later Darragh McGale got Davitts third goal with a neat finish after a one-two with the hard-working Danny Corless, following great work from the impressive Tadhg Feerick. Midfielder Ronan Kelly pointed in the 24th and 26th minutes to leave Davitts ahead by 3-7 to 0-3 at the interval.
Dylan Burke and Davey Hennessy shot points in the opening minute of the second half and Stephen Nyland bagged his second goal in the 33rd minute, getting on the end of a fine Michael Conroy delivery. The home side added points from Tommy Waldron and Davey Hennessy (2) before Ronan Kelly burst through the Garry defence and fired to the top corner from twenty metres for Davitts fourth goal in the 42nd minute. Davey Hennessy pointed a minute later before the visitors opened their second half account with a 44th minute point followed by a 45th minute two-pointer. Indeed, Garrymore could have easily had a few goals of their own but for the excellent goalkeeping of Joe Prendergast who pulled off some brilliant saves. Davey Hennessy blasted home his second goal of the game in the 48th minute after being set up by Liam Kearns. Tom Corless added a point two minutes later with Garrymore pulling two back in the 51st and 53rd minutes. Davitts sub Fionn McLoughlin got the last two scores of the game, a 54th minute point and a well-finished 59th minute goal, as his side ran out the very convincing winners.
Davitts had great displays all over the field with Joe Prendergast, Tadhg Feerick, Sean Keadin, Ronan Kelly, Danny Corless and Davey Hennessy excelling.
