Juniors v Westport – Match Report
Davitts and Westport clashed in the Senior League Div 1D on Saturday evening in Ballindine with the homeside edging a thrilling game by three points, 2-15 to 3-9. The game was very well contested throughout and there was never more than three points between the teams at any stage.
Aidan McTigue got Davitts off to a flyer with an early goal but Westport cancelled that out a minute later. Davitts added some nice points from Seamus Roche, Liam Kearns and Aidan McTigue before Westport goaled again in the thirteenth minute to take the lead. Davitts fought back with points from Martin Cosgrove, Darren Connolly (2), Matthew Trench and a beauty from Seamus Roche together with a brilliant individual goal from the very impressive Liam Kearns to lead by 2-8 to 2-5 at half time.
The two teams slugged it out in the second half with both sides showing admirable spirit. Westport got on top in the third quarter of the game and a well taken goal put them ahead with fifteen minutes remaining but Davitts finished the game strongly, with the half back line of James Cummins, Donal Ronayne and Martin Cosgrove driving on their side, and points from Darren Connolly (3), and Liam Kearns (2) saw them taking the two valuable league points.
Davitts had outstanding performers in Brian Clarke, Donal Ronayne, Seamus Roche, man of the match Liam Kearns, Darren Connolly and Aidan McTigue.
