Juniors v Westport–League Div 4 – Match Report
Davitts Juniors collected their first brace of Div 4 League points after a hard fought 1-14 to 1-13 victory over Westport in sunny Ballindine on Sunday.
Davitts, with the assistance of the wind, had led by 1-8 to 0-6 at the interval. Their point scorers in the first half were Richie Kilkenny, Clive Hennigan, Dara O Flaherty, Sean Waldron, Donie Ronayne and Liam Kearns (3). The impressive Dara O Flaherty buried the goal after good work by Richie Kilkenny.
Westport came out with all guns blazing in the second half and an unanswered goal and five points from them in the opening fifteen minutes of the half saw them go three points ahead. Davitts rallied well and points from Liam Kearns, Dara O Flaherty and Niall Kearns levelled the game. Two Westport points were cancelled out with similar efforts from Paul Carey and Liam Kearns before Aidan McTigue struck the winning score after a long delivery from John Costello.
This was a fine team performance with Cian Naughton, Gerard McWalter, Donie Ronayne, Liam Kearns, Dara O Flaherty (who had a stormer) and Richie Kilkenny very prominent throughout and substitutes Niall Kearns, Aidan McTigue and Paul Carey also playing major roles in the victory.
