Junior v Mayo Gaels match report

Davitts 3-9  Mayo Gaels 2-14

Davitts hosted Mayo Gaels in the County Junior B Championship on Sunday with the visitors winning by two points after a cracking encounter.

Davitts got off to a flying start with a Brian Clarke goal in the first minute after some great play from Liam Kearns and Richie Kilkenny. Liam Kearns pointed twice before the Gaels opened their account with a 7th minute point. A 9th minute Brian Og McTigue point was cancelled out by a similar score by the Gaels a minute later. Points from Liam Kearns and Donie Ronayne and two Mayo Gaels points were followed by a second Davitts goal in the 24th minute, Richie Kilkenny supplying the finish after good approach play by Brian Og McTigue and Darragh McGale. Mayo Gaels responded well and scored an unanswered  goal and four points to leave the sides level at halftime.

Mayo Gaels started the second half in whirlwind fashion scoring a goal and a point in the first three minutes. Points from Liam Kearns (2) and Richie Kilkenny narrowed the gap to a single point before Darragh McGale goaled in the 40th minute after a slick passing move involving Brian Birmingham, Liam Kearns and Ryan McLoughlin, to put his side ahead again. Three Gaels points between the 41st and the 46th minutes put them back in front. Davitts keeper Tristan Diskin pulled off a superb save before Darragh McGale levelled it in the 49th minute. A black card for Brian Birmingham two minutes later didn’t help Davitts cause and the Gaels pointed twice in the last ten minutes to clinch the win.
