Disappointing end to season for U-21’s
Davitts and St.Gerards met for the second year running in the Brennan Cup final in Garrymore on Wednesday evening with St. Gerards avenging last years defeat on a 1-13 to 1-5 scoreline. On a wet evening, the first half exchanges were very tight after St. Gerards scored a first minute goal. Points by Fergal McGrath (2) and Josh Ronayne left the halftime score at 1-2 to 0-3.
St. Gerards started the second half brightly and had extended their lead to 1-5 to 0-3 before Josh Ronayne first pointed and then was on the end of a good move to blast to the St.Gerards net to narrow the gap to two points after twelve minutes. Davitts were enjoying a dominant spell at this stage but the game’s turning point came after St.Gerards had extended their lead to three points again. A terrific Davitts move involving several players culminated with Liam Kearns shot for goal rattling off the upright and Josh Ronayne’s effort from the rebound thundering off the other upright. A goal at this stage would have leveled the game but instead St.Gerards went down the field and pointed. They added on three more points and Davitts knew it was not going to be their day when Liam Kearns found himself one on one with the St.Gerards keeper but unusually for him, shot wide. St. Gerards scored four more magnificent points before the finish with Davitts only reply coming from a Keith Prendergast free. On a disappointing night for Davitts, they had battling performers in goalie David Mitchell, Kevin Gallagher, the excellent Mark Ronayne, Josh Ronayne and Fergal McGrath.
