Davitts v Kiltane – Match Report
Kiltane 1-7, Davitts 0-8.
Kiltane hosted Davitts in this full blooded Senior League Div 1B clash in wet and windy Bangor on Saturday evening. Davitts started brightly, with the assistance of the strong wind, and early points from Paul Carey and Michael Conroy got them off the mark before Kiltane replied with a Mikey Sweeney point. After ten minutes came the game’s crucial score. Davitts goalkeeper Mark Diskin slipped as he kicked out the ball, which went straight to Mikey Sweeney and he passed on to Edmund Barrett who gleefully hammered the ball to the net. Kiltane now had their tails up and scored two more points via Sweeney and midfielder Sean Gaughan, Davitts replying with points from Paul Carey and Ronan McNamara, to leave the homeside ahead by 1-3 to 0-4 at halftime and looking good to coast to victory. In a two minute spell midway through that half Davitts Josh Ronayne hit the butt of the Kiltane post, Kiltane’s Mikey Sweeney rattled the crossbar while Michael Conroy was deprived a goal by Kiltane’s very impressive goalkeeper Cathal Carey, who saved superbly, one of a number of great saves he made in the game.
Davitts however came out for the second half in determined fashion and played some great football into the teeth of the wind. Midfielder Ronan McNamara began to dominate that sector and Kiltane were struggling to contain the strong running of the impressive Paul Carey and Colm Boyle. Excellent points by Michael Conroy, Keith Prendergast and Boyle put Davitts into the lead after fifteen minutes before Edmund Barrett leveled the game with a long range free. Conroy put Davitts in front again ten minutes from the end but this was cancelled out by another Barrett free before Ultan Corrigan scored a beauty from the right wing to give Kiltane the lead and sub David Conroy added another in injury time. Davitts still had time to attack and nearly snatched victory with Carlos O Gara and Paul Carey coming close with two late goal efforts.
Best for Kiltane were Cathal and Darragh Carey, Rory Corrigan, PJ and Sean Gaughan, Mikey Sweeney, Edmund Barrett and Ultan Corrigan.
