County Junior B C’ship v Burrishoole match report
Davitts 3-8 Burrishoole 2-4
A strong second half performance by Davitts saw them defeat Burrishoole in the Mayo Junior B Championship match played in difficult slippery conditions in Hollymount on Friday evening. Burrishoole had led by three points at half time but Davitts superior fitness levels saw them take over in the second half.
We had to wait until the 9th minute for the first score, a well taken Burrishoole point. Liam Kearns replied with a Davitts point in the 12th minute. A Burrishoole point in the 19th minute was cancelled out by a Liam Kearns point in the 20th minute. Davitts midfielder Fionnan Gallagher pointed from long range in the 22nd minute, a score that was matched by Burrishoole a minute later. Davitts had spurned three great goal chances but Sean Keadin supplied a tidy finish for the first goal of the game in the 24th minute to put Davitts three points ahead but two rather fortuitous Burrishoole goals in the 25th and 28th minutes saw them ahead by 2-3 to 1-3 at half time.
Davitts were well on top throughout the second half although they were finding it hard to get the scores on the board. Davey Hennessy pointed in the 36th minute and the Davitts half back line of Tom Corless, Mark Ronayne and Aaron Trench all got forward to shoot the next three points in the 41st, 43rd and 48th minutes. Burrishoole had a player red carded as their discipline deserted them in the second half. Jack Devane sprung into life and goaled in the 49th minute and four minutes later, after Liam Kearns was fouled in the box, Davey Hennessy drove home from the penalty spot for his side’s third goal. Hennessy pointed in the 60th minute after another Burrishoole player received his marching orders and Burrishoole hit the last score of the game, a 61st minute point, their only score of the second half, to complete the scoring.
The Davitts backs played well all through the game with Tom Corless, Brian Birmingham and Mark Ronayne very prominent. Liam Macken and Fionnan Gallagher had a great battle at midfield with the Burrishoole duo. All of the forwards tried hard but the greasy conditions didn’t help their cause. Jack Devane had a great last quarter as did Davey Hennessy. Ronan McNamara, making a welcome comeback after a lengthly injury lay off, got a second half run out in goals.
