Davitts v Claremorris – O’Mara Cup – Match Report

Games between Davitts and Claremorris are usually close tense affairs but this O Mara Cup clash between the two sides in Claremorris on Saturday really only came to life in the last ten minutes when understrength Claremorris goaled leaving just three points in it, after Davitts had dominated the game up to this. Davitts however tagged on three more points via man of the match Michael Conroy, Keith Prendergast and Liam Kearns to secure a second victory in this competition.

Davitts looked impressive in the first half and built up a lead of 0-8 to 0-1 at halftime, the points coming from Conroy (5), impressive Aidan McTigue (2) and Paul Carey. Claremorris chipped away at the lead after the break and when they scored the only goal of the game, their supporters sensed an upset (maybe remembering the corresponding fixture last year), but Davitts finished well.

Expect a closer game when these two teams meet in the first round of the senior league in three weeks time. The final score was 0-15 to 1-8. Davitts best in this game were goalie Paddy Kirrane, Michael Waldron, Johnno Clarke, Colm Boyle, Ronan McNamara, John Heneghan, Aidan McTigue and the superb Michael Conroy.

Davitts team: Paddy Kirrane, Tommy Nolan, Michael Waldron, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, Colm Boyle, Colm Roche, Ronan McNamara, John Heneghan, Keith Prendergast (0-1), Paul Carey (0-1), Liam Kearns (0-1), Aidan McTigue (0-3), David McDonagh, Michael Conroy (0-9). South Mayo Junior B Semi-Final – Match Report

Davitts junior team put up a spirited display when going down by 3-14 to 2-9 against The Neale in the South Mayo junior B semi-final, in an entertaining game played in Ballindine on Sunday. Davitts, minus the services of star forward Pat Hopkins, struggled to come to grips with the physically stronger Neale side, who had the greater threat up front. Davits trailed by 2-7 to 0-3 at half time but stuck to their task in the second half and fought bravely right up to the final whistle.

Controversial team manager John A Noone was very proud of his young team, and many of these players will play a big part in the future of the club. Davitts had super performances from Dave Mitchell, Mark Ronayne (0-1), the energetic Luke Ronayne, Michael Waldron (0-1), JP Kirrane and the lionhearted John Costello in defence. Midfielders John Heneghan and Tommy Mitchell battled throughout. The tireless David Cosgrove (0-5) and Kieran Mooney (2-1) were in terrific form up front, well supported by veteran team captain Mark Diskin, Colm Roche and the talented Con Penny (0-1).

Noone emptied his bench in a vain attempt to rescue this game and John Paul Clarke, Dara Halligan, Tommy Heneghan and Tommy Clarke all tried very hard for the home team.

U-15 Division 2 Final – Match Report

Davitts u–15 team were heavily defeated by neighbours Carras in the County Div 2 League final in Claremorris on Sunday. The final scoreline of 3-13 to 0-4 fairly reflects the dominance of the Carras team, in a game played in difficult conditions, and not helped by an extremely whistle happy referee who made sure that the game never flowed and, in all fairness, who spoiled the game for the large, and predominantly Davitts attendance. Two well converted first half penalties gave Carras the halftime advantage of 2-4 to 0-3, having the assistance of the tricky wind, but Carras completely dominated the second half and ran out convincing winners.

Davitts will wonder just what went wrong as they had defeated the same opposition by five points a few weeks ago, but this really was a day when anything that could go wrong did go badly wrong. The loss of the injured Matthew Trench, man of the match when the sides last met, was a big blow to Davitts who had excellent battling performances from Michael Mangan, William Freeley, John Huane, Donie Ronayne, Liam Noone, Tommy Waldron and Jonathon Fahy, and these group of players are going to bring lots of success to the club in the coming years. A big thank you to the supporters who turned out in such large numbers on a miserable day.

Davitts team: Michael Mangan, William Freeley, Cathal Hennelly, John Huane, Donie Ronayne, Jack Rodgers, Padraig Mangan, Thomas Charles, Shane Cummins, Liam Noone (0-1), Michael Clarke (0-2), Tommy Waldron (0-1), Gerard Griffin. Subs used: Jonathon Fahy, Liam Connolly, Dylan Higgins.

U-15 and Junior – Match Reports

Davitts U-15 team had two good league victories in the last week. Last Sunday they recorded a 2-9 to 1-5 win, away to Crossmolina. Davitts always held the upper hand in this physical encounter and had great performances from Tommy Charles, Padraig Mangan, Thomas Waldron, William Freeley , Matthew Trench and Donie Ronayne.

They followed that up with a 3-16 to 1-2 defeat of Kilmeena, in Kilmeena, not winning as convincingly as the scoreline suggests. Tommy Waldron was superb in this game and got great assistance from Shane Cummins (who scored 2-3), Padraig Mangan, Johnny Huane, Donie Ronayne and William Freeley.

Meanwhile the junior team put up a brave fight before being defeated 4-10 to 3-6 by Carramore in the South Mayo junior B championship. Davitts had star players in midfielders John Heneghan and Tommy Mitchell, Michael Waldron, Mark Ronayne and the energetic JP Kirrane in defence and up front Pat Hopkins (scorer of a fantastic goal), the prolific Con Penny and John Paul Clarke, while substitutes Seamus Roche and Tommy Heneghan also did well when introduced.

Senior, Junior & U-15 – Match Reports

Davitts travelled to Garrymore and shared the Division 1B senior league points in a cracking game on Sunday. Garrymore were well on top for most of the first half and led by 1-8 to 0-2 after twenty minutes. Davitts however clawed their way back into the game notching four unanswered points before the break. Davitts completely took over in the second half with Ronan McNamara, David McDonagh and Pat Coyne dominating the aerial exchanges, Colm Boyle and Frankie Barrett supreme in defence and Aidan McTigue in top form up front, and will consider themselves very unlucky not to have won this game. The final scoreline was 0-14 to 1-11.

On Saturday evening the junior team defeated Aughamore, 2-7 to 1-9, in an exciting Division 1F senior league clash, played in Ballindine. Minor star Josh Ronayne had an excellent match while the lethal sharpshooter Con Penny scored both goals, two cracking finishes past the hopeless, sorry hapless, Patrick Finnegan, the Aughamore custodian.

The under 15’s had a very impressive 0-18 to 1-7 victory over Swinford in Div 2A of the county league. This was a good solid team display with Thomas Charles, Donie Ronayne, Tommy Waldron, Liam Noone and Matthew Trench in terrific form.

Walsh Cup Final – Match Report

Walsh Cup Final - match report

Davitts defeated Belmullet in the final of the Michael Walsh Intermediate League in sunny McHale Park on Sunday. The final scoreline was 1-12 to 1-7 but in all fairness Davitts won this game very comfortably and a much greater winning margin would not have flattered them. The powerful Ronan McNamara and Keith Glynn lorded midfield for most of the game and the Davitts defence were very impressive led on by their inspirational captain Colm Boyle (is there a better wing back in Mayo?). Early points by Pat Coyne, Fergal McGrath and Michael Conroy (2) had Davitts on their way and when Boyle buried an excellent goal after great work by Colm Roche, Conroy and Coyne the writing was on the wall for Belmullet although three late points narrowed the lead to a goal at the break, 1-4 to 0-4. Davitts continued to dominate in the second half and even a lucky Belmullet goal with 15 minutes remaining was not going to deny the men from Ballindine and Irishtown, who finished with points from Boyle, Conroy, Aidan McTigue and David McDonagh.

Davitts team: Paddy Kirrane, Martin Cosgrove, Frankie Barrett, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke (0-1), James Cummins, Colm Boyle (1-1), Ronan McNamara (0-2), Keith Glynn, Pat Coyne (0-1), Keith Prendergast, Colm Roche, Fergal McGrath (0-1), David McDonagh (0-1), Michael Conroy (0-4). Subs used: Aidan McTigue (0-1), Liam Kearns, Richie Kilkenny and Shane Mitchell.
