Junior B C’ship v Balla match report

Balla 1-5  Davitts 1-14

Davitts travelled to Balla for the first round of the Mayo Junior B Championship and, after a very close first half, got the better of their hosts to win with a bit in hand.

Fionn McTigue opened the scoring in with a second minute point for Davitts. In the 11th minute Balla got a timely boost when a long delivery was flicked to the Davitts net to put the homeside two up. Davitts hit back with purpose and a Brian Clarke point in the 12th minute was followed by a 13th minute goal neatly finished by Darragh McGale, after some slick interplay between himself, Andy Peters and Ryan McLoughlin. Two Balla points in the 14th and 16th minutes levelled matters but points from Tom Corless, having a blinder in the Davitts half-back line, and midfielder Ronan Kelly in the 19th and 20th minutes, restored Davitts’ two point lead. A 28th minute Balla point was cancelled out by a similar score from Darragh McGale to leave Davitts ahead at the break by 1-5 to 1-3.

Three early second half points from the boots of Fionn McLoughlin, Ronan Kelly and Darragh McGale put Davitts five up. Balla pulled one back in the 35th minute but Davitts were playing well and further points from Ronan Kelly, Fionn McLoughlin and Ryan McLoughlin in the 37th, 42nd and 45th minutes opened up a seven point gap between the sides. Balla reduced that deficit to six with a 50th minute point but Davitts finished the game off in style with three excellent points from Cathal Corless in the 52nd, 54th and 58th minutes, to clinch victory after a hard-fought match.

Brian Birmingham, Patrick Keadin, Jordan Flanagan, Tom Corless, Cathal Corless, Ronan Kelly, Andy Peters (until he had to retire before half-time with a hamstring injury), Darragh McGale and the McLoughlin brothers, Ryan and Fionn, were impressive for the winners.

Davitts: Joe Prendergast, Patrick Keadin, Jordan Flanagan, Brian Birmingham, Sean Keadin, Thomas Ronayne, Tom Corless (0-1), Cathal Corless (0-3), Ronan Kelly (0-3), Brian Clarke (0-1), Andy Peters, Danny Corless, Ryan McLoughlin (0-1), Darragh McGale (1-2), Fionn McTigue (0-1). U-14 League Div 4 v Westport B match report

Gaeil Na Daibheidí 13-25  Westport B 0-1

The Westport B U-14 team came to Ballindine on Monday evening but were soundly beaten by GND in Div 4 of the league. The Davitts/Mayo Gaels combination were completely on top throughout and although the Westport lads fought bravely right up to the final whistle, nothing went their way on this occasion.

GND had built up an 8-11 to 0-0 lead at the halfway stage with Blake Bradley (4-3), Niall McDermott (1-1), Cormac Devane (1-2), Seamie Roche (1-1), Tadhg Kirrane (0-2), Conal Boyle (1-0), Luke Roche (0-1) and Conor Walsh (0-1) the scorers. At the back, the home team defended very well with Cathal Commins and Tom Roche in great form, well supported by Nathan Turner, Joe Trench, Jack Duggan, Ruari O Dea and Tom Diskin. Midfielders Cormac Devane and Sean Prendergast ensured a liberal supply of ball to the lethal forward-line.

Gaeil Na Daibheidí were able to run their bench and the subs Tom Hyland, Kaden Heneghan, Carraig Kilkenny, Markuss Visnevskis and the very impressive Luke Roche all did well. Westport scored early in the second half but GND powered on and they added on a series of scores from Niall McDermott (1-3), Luke Roche (1-3), flying wing-back Jack Duggan (1-2), Conal Boyle (0-2), Tadhg Kirrane (1-1), Cormac Devane (0-1), Blake Bradley (0-1), Seamie Roche (0-1) and Tom Diskin (1-0), to win emphatically.

Senior League Div 1A v Breaffy match report

Breaffy 3-11  Davitts 1-14

Breaffy hosted Davitts in the fourth round of the Senior League Div 1A on Friday evening and came out on top by three points after a fine game played in beautiful conditions.

Davitts set the early running and a first minute point by the lively Ciaran Treacy, a two-pointer from Jack Melvin in the 6th  minute, a neat Tommy Waldron point a minute later and a second Ciaran Treacy score in the 11th minute saw Davitts five points ahead. Breaffy were enjoying plenty of possession but their shooting was very erratic. A Tommy O Reilly point in the 14th minute got them up and running and they quickly added added points from Joe Mellett and Conor O Shea to their tally before an 18th minute goal from Joe Mellett saw them take the lead. A 21st minute two-pointer from Jack Melvin put Davitts ahead again but Breaffy replied with a fine point from Conor Beirne in the 23rd minute. Ciaran Treacy for Davitts and the home-side’s Tommy O Reilly swapped points in the 25th and 26th minutes respectively. Jack Melvin and Ciaran Treacy pointed  in the 27th and 28th minutes as Davitts went two ahead but Breaffy finished the half off well with a 29th minute Paul McDermott goal and a Conor O Shea point on the stroke of half-time giving them a 2-6 to 0-10 interval lead.

Breaffy were well on top in the third quarter and they extended their lead to five points with a Jack Livingstone two-pointer in the 34th minute and a brilliant Daire Morrin point in the 36th minute but Davitts were hanging on. After a scoreless eleven minutes, Jack Melvin pointed for Davitts in the 47th minute while a goal for Breaffy four minutes later, finished to the Davitts net by substitute Pierce Deane, just seconds after his introduction, seemingly put the home-side into the comfort zone. Davitts sub, Niall Treacy, making a welcome return from injury, had other ideas and he slotted home a clever goal in the 52nd minute as the tempo of the game lifted. Rory Martyn pointed for Breaffy in the 53rd minute but three unanswered Niall Treacy points in the 54th, 57th and 58th minutes reduced the deficit to just two points. Breaffy survived Davitts’ best efforts at an equaliser or a winner, and their towering midfielder, Niall Carter, had the last say with a 59th minute point.

Breaffy were best served by Jack Livingstone, Conor Beirne, Daire Morrin, Niall Carter, Oisin Tunney, Tommy O Reilly and Joe Mellett.

O Mara Cup semi-final v Mayo Gaels match report

Davitts 1-12  Mayo Gaels 1-15

Mayo Gaels qualified for the O Mara Cup final after a good three point victory over Davitts in the semi-final played in Ballindine on Friday evening. After a well-contested and exciting match, the visitors proved too strong over the course of the hour.

Davitts played with the assistance of the stiff wind in the opening half but, after a very impressive start, Mayo Gaels pointed in the first and second minutes to take an early lead. A brilliant two-pointer from Dylan Gallagher in the 6th minute tied the game. An 8th minute point by the Gaels was cancelled out in the next minute by Ciaran Treacy. Mayo Gaels regained the lead in the 12th minute with their fourth point but Davitts hit their best spell in the next fifteen minutes. Dylan Gallagher pointed in the 14th minute, Jack Melvin shot a two-pointer in the 15th minute, Shane Treacy fired over a beauty in the 17th minute and his brother Ciaran got the Davitts goal a minute later, as the home side opened up a six point lead. The lead really should have been bigger but for some wayward shooting. The Gaels fought back and two quick-fire points in the 26th and 27th minutes reduced the deficit to four and another classy Shane Treacy point and one for Mayo Gaels on the stroke of half-time left Davitts ahead by 1-8 to 0-7 at the interval.

Mayo Gaels got a firm grip on the midfield battle in the second half and they scored the first point of the second period after a minute. Four minutes later a two-pointer from the visitors closed the gap to a single point. Like Davitts in the first half, the Gaels were guilty of some poor shooting in the second half and a Thomas Ronayne point for Davitts in the 41st minute extended his side’s lead to two. Mayo Gaels were dominating possession now and they shot points in the 43rd, 46th and 50th minutes to take the lead. A 52nd minute goal for the visitors put them four ahead. Davitts rallied and Jack Melvin shot his second two-pointer of the game in the next minute. A 58th minute Gaels point was matched by Dylan Gallagher as Davitts strove hard to try and work a goal-scoring chance but The Gaels had the last say with a 60th minute point to secure their place in the final.

Best for Davitts were Patrick Keadin, Thomas Ronayne, Cathal Corless, Jack Melvin, Shane Treacy, Ronan Kelly, Dylan Gallagher and Ciaran Treacy.

Davitts: Stephen Nyland, Patrick Keadin, Cathal Higgins, Kieran Fahy, Tom Corless, Thomas Ronayne (0-1), Cathal Corless, Charlie Phillips, Jack Melvin (0-4), Mark Birmingham, Shane Treacy (0-2), Ronan Kelly, Dylan Gallagher (0-4), Andy Peters, Ciaran Treacy (1-1).
