O Mara Cup v Hollycarra match report

Davitts 1-14  Hollymount Carramore 0-8

Davitts opened their O Mara Cup campaign with a good nine point victory over Hollymount Carramore in Cong on Friday evening. After a slow start in the very wet conditions, Davitts took control of the game and went on to win their first competitive game under the new rules.

Hollycarra opened the scoring with a fourth minute two-pointer and a seventh minute point before Niall Treacy got Davitts off the mark with a point in the 10th minute. A Jack Melvin two-pointer levelled it in the 13th minute and a Niall Treacy point two minutes later gave Davitts the lead. Hollycarra equalised in the 19th minute but a fine two-pointer by Jack Melvin in the 23rd minute and a Thomas Ronayne point three minutes later put Davitts three ahead before Hollycarra pointed in the 30th minute just before the half-time whistle to leave Davitts ahead by 0-7 to 0-5 at the break.

Niall Treacy and Jack Devane extended Davitts lead in the 31st and 36th minutes. A 39th minute Hollycarra point was quickly cancelled out by Niall Treacy. Jack Devane put Davitts four ahead with a neat 41st minute point. A 45th minute Hollycarra point narrowed the deficit but Davitts really turned on the heat in the final quarter. Niall Treacy, proving to be a real menace, pointed in the 46th minute. The same player notched the game’s only goal in the 50th minute when his searing run ended with a shot for goal that was partially parried by the keeper but crept over the line. Treacy fired over another point two minutes later. The final scores of the game came in the closing moments with a Hollycarra point being matched by Niall Treacy.

Cathal Higgins, Tommy Waldron, Thomas Ronayne, Charlie Phillips, Jack Melvin, Cathal Corless, Niall Treacy and Jack Devane were very prominent figures in this game for Davitts, who will travel to Cong again next Friday night to play The Neale.
