Mayo U-21 A C’ship v Castlebar match report

Davitts 0-7  Castlebar Mitchels 3-16

After a closely fought first half, Castlebar Mitchels U-21 team gave a scintillating second half display of attacking football, in the first round of the A Championship in Ballindine on Sunday.

Jack Melvin and Ciaran Treacy scored points in the 2nd and 3rd minute as the home side settled well. Mitchels pulled one back in the 4th minute but points from Davey Hennessy and Dylan Gallagher extended Davitts lead to three. The visitors then hit three unanswered points to equalise the game and an excellent goal in the 21st minute put them ahead. A Dylan Gallagher point in the 26th minute was cancelled out by Castlebar just before the half-time whistle to leave them ahead by 1-5 to 0-5 at the break.

The visitors showed that they meant business and they started the second half with four points in the first three minutes. Two Davitts points from Davey Hennessy in the 38th and 39th minutes gave the home-side a glimmer of hope but from then on the Mitchels assumed complete domination and they shot an impressive 2-7 in the final twenty minutes of the game.

Davitts, minus the services of some key players, had battling performances from Brian Óg McTigue, Brian and Mark Birmingham, Sean Keadin, Sean Clarke, Ronan Kelly and Jack Melvin.

Davitts: Dylan O Brien, Brian Óg McTigue, Brian Birmingham, Sean Keadin, Fionn McLoughlin, Mark Birmingham, Sean Clarke, Jack Melvin (0-1), Burke Briere, Jack Devane, Dylan Gallagher (0-2), Ronan Kelly, Ciaran Treacy (0-1), Davey Hennessy (0-3), Conor McDermott. Mayo Intermediate C’ship S-F v Moy Davitts match report

Moy Davitts 0-11  Davitts 1-7

Davitts’ Intermediate Championship campaign ended in Charlestown on Saturday after being beaten by Moy Davitts. After a very poor-quality first half, the game sprung to life after the break and the large crowd were treated to a pulsating second half, with the East Mayo team just shading it to reach the final.

Davitts played with the advantage of the stiff wind in the first half but their shooting was wayward and their three point tally from eleven shots in the opening period was very disappointing. It took until the tenth minute before Niall Treacy, who had an excellent game throughout, opened the scoring. Ronan Clarke equalised in the 14th minute but Niall Treacy pointed again in the 22nd minute and a 27th minute Jack Melvin point put Davitts two up. Cian McHale hit the final score of the half in the 29th minute to reduce the gap to a point. The 0-3 to 0-2 advantage that Davitts held at the break did not look nearly enough, given the strength of the wind but they came out fired up.

A Jack Melvin point in the first minute of the second half was followed a minute later by a super Niall Treacy goal, after a brilliant pass from Fenton Kelly, to put Davitts five points ahead. Moy Davitts didn’t panic though and two points apiece from Ronan Clarke and Cian McHale narrowed the gap to a single point. A 42nd minute Niall Treacy score put Davitts two ahead. Well-taken points from Sean Kelly in the 45th minute and a 47th minute Ronan Clarke point levelled it. A fine Dylan Gallagher score put Davitts ahead again in the 49th minute but Ronan Clarke cancelled that out inside the next minute and a 53rd minute Cian McHale point saw Moy Davitts take the lead for the first time in the game. In the 55th minute Davitts Ciaran Treacy came desperately close to goaling for Davitts, his soccer-style effort grazing the post but his brother Niall tied the game again a minute later. Both sides had chances in the remaining minutes as the play ebbed and flowed but it was Cian McHale who fired over the winner in the 60th minute to claim a place in the final for Moy Davitts.

Colm Boyle, who had a powerful game in the Davitts defence, Cathal Higgins, Mark Birmingham, Jack Melvin, Stephen Nyland, Ciaran Treacy, Dylan Gallagher and the irrepressible Niall Treacy played very well for a Davitts side that showed their true form in the second half.

Davitts: Dylan O Brien, Brian Birmingham, Cathal Higgins, Kieran Fahy, Brian Óg McTigue, Colm Boyle, Mark Birmingham, Jack Melvin (0-2), Cian Naughton, Shane Treacy, Dylan Gallagher (0-1), Stephen Nyland, Ciaran Treacy, Niall Treacy (1-4), Fenton Kelly. Subs used: Darragh McGale, Liam Kearns, Ronan McNamara, Sean Keadin.
