Senior League 1A v Ballina match report

Davitts 2-5  Ballina Stephenites 1-14

County champions Ballina proved too strong for Davitts in this Senior League Div 1A clash in sunny Ballindine on Sunday.

Luke Feeney put the visitors in front with a first minute point and Conor McStay doubled the lead in the 9th minute. Ronan McNamara opened the Davitts account in the 11th minute with a fine point. Ballina extended their lead with points in the 13th and 19th minutes via Sean Fitzpatrick and Conor McStay. Scores were hard to come by in the tight exchanges but Davitts points from Brian Clarke and Ronan McNamara in the 21st and 25th minutes cut the Ballina lead to two points. Aodan McCann and Conor McStay pointed for Ballina in the 27th and 29th minutes and on the stroke of half-time the latter benefitted from a defensive error to fire home his side’s only goal of the game. This left the visitors ahead by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break.

Ronan McNamara pointed for Davitts in the third minute of the second half with Conor McStay following suit for Ballina three minutes later. Tommy Waldron for the homeside and Ciaran Boland for the visitors exchanged points in the 37th minute. Senior League 3B v Breaffy match report

Breaffy 1-7  Davitts 1-14

Davitts travelled to Breaffy on Friday evening to take on the Senior League Div 3B table-topping home side and came away with the two points after an impressive display.

Breaffy took the lead with a second minute point but three Darragh McGale points in the 4th, 5th and 7th minutes put the wind-assisted visitors two up. An eighth minute point for the hosts was cancelled out by the lively Ciaran Treacy a minute later. Breaffy closed the gap to a single point in the 11th minute but Davitts scores from Fionn McLoughlin, Darragh McGale and marauding wing-back Brian Birmingham extended the lead to four by the twentieth minute of the half. The home team pointed in the 24th minute but Davitts points from Brian Clarke and Fionn McLoughlin saw them lead by 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval.

Two points from Keith Prendergast in the first ten minutes of the second half were matched by Breaffy. Davitts began to take control of the game and after a barren scoring spell, a Brian Clarke in the 55th minute was closely followed by a Ryan McLoughlin goal, after a great move involving Donie Ronayne, Tommy Waldron and Keith Prendergast. A very fortuitous Breaffy goal in the 59th minute and a 60th minute point left six between the sides. Johnno Clarke shot the last score of the game, a 63rd minute point, before referee Jack Ruddy (who had a very good game) blew the final whistle.

There were solid performances all over the field in this game which eases Davitts relegation worries greatly.

Senior League 1A v Knockmore match report

Knockmore 2-15  Davitts 2-6

Davitts made the journey to Knockmore on Friday evening for this Senior League Div 1A clash but found the home side too strong, suffering a nine point defeat.

The home side dominated the first half and led by 1-9 to 0-2 at half-time, after playing against the wind. Knockmore’s lively forward-line had the Davitts defence in trouble with their clever movement. Niall Treacy and Dylan Gallagher were the Davitts scorers in that half but Knockmore were dominating the aerial exchanges in the middle third and their players were much sharper to the breaking ball.

Davitts improved considerably after the break and an early point followed by a goal from the wily Michael Conroy, a second half sub, gave the visitors some hope. The goal came in the 33rd minute after some intricate play involving Colm Boyle, Thomas Ronayne and Mark Birmingham. Knockmore responded well and they shot three points in the next ten minutes before Davitts scored again, a 44th minute Dylan Gallagher point. A minute later, Knockmore wrapped up the win when they converted a penalty. A 47th minute Niall Treacy point for a battling Davitts team was cancelled out by the local side five minutes later. A Dylan Gallagher point and a superb Jack Devane goal, after a fine passing move, narrowed the gap to seven points with five minutes remaining but Knockmore finished off the game with the final two scores in the 59th and 63rd minutes.

Senior League 3B v Claremorris match report

Claremorris 1-13  Davitts 1-7

This Senior League Div 3B league match in Claremorris on Sunday was a much closer match than the score-line suggests. Indeed with five minutes remaining Davitts were leading by a point but a late scoring burst by the home team, scoring scoring 1-4, saw them take the spoils.

A Keith Prendergast goal and points from Fearghal McGrath (2) and Ronan McNamara saw Davitts lead by 1-3 to 0-5 at the interval. The home team were much more economical up front and they shot the first three points of the second half to lead by two points before Aidan McTigue got a Davitts point in the 47th minute. A Claremorris score in the next minute restored their two point lead but points from Davitts’ Ciaran Treacy (2) and Ronan Kelly saw Davitts back in front after 52 minutes. Claremorris finished the game off impressively and they shot fine points in the 55th, 56th, 58th and 61st minutes while also grabbing a 60th minute goal, capitalising on a Davitts defensive error, to win the game by six points.

Neil Douglas got the first of Castlebar’s four goals a minute later after a fine run. Niall Treacy pulled a point back in the 5th minute and fired home a brilliant goal two minutes later, after a brilliant Liam Kearns pass, to put Davitts ahead. The lively Ben McHale levelled the game with a neat 9th minute point which was quickly followed by a second Mitchel’s goal, this one courtesy of wing-back Donal Newcombe after a defence-splitting run. Niall Treacy pointed in the 12th minute and three minutes later, the same player got on the end of a fine move before appearing to have been pushed to the ground as he was about to shoot. Davitts appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears but Charlie Phillips did salvage a point for the homeside. Mitchels hit three unanswered points between the 16th and 19th minutes through Steve Keane, James Durcan and Jack O’Reilly but Davitts finished the half well with points from Niall Treacy (2) and Jack Melvin to leave Castlebar ahead by 2-5 to 1-7 at the break.
