Senior v Islandeady match report

Davitts 0-12  Islandeady 1-7

Davitts hosted Islandeady in Div 2B of the Senior League on Saturday evening and two late points from Niall Treacy and Johnno Clarke secured the win for the home side after a tough battle. The greasy conditions and made it difficult to play good football and while the quality of play wasn’t top class, you couldn’t question the commitment displayed by both teams.

Islandeady opened the scoring with a second minute point. Niall Treacy, who had a terrific game throughout, equalised in the 7th minute and Fenton Kelly put Davitts ahead with a superb point in the tenth minute after great work by Evan Ronane.  An Islandeady point in the 13th minute was matched by Evan Ronane a minute later with Niall Treacy extending Davitts lead to two points in the 15th minute. In the 20th minute, a long delivery into the Davitts goalmouth was not dealt with by the defenders and the ball ended up in the net for the only goal of the game and put Islandeady into the lead. Jack Ronayne shot an excellent equaliser in the 26th minute and Cathal Corless completed the first half scoring with another fine point two minutes later to leave Davitts ahead, 0-6 to 1-2 at the break.

Cathal Corless pointed in the 31st minute but Islandeady points in the 32nd and 35th minutes levelled the game. Shane Treacy put Davitts in front again with a 43rd point and Niall Treacy extended the lead to two points with a quality score two minutes later. Two points by the visitors in the 47th and 50th minutes saw the sides level again. A 52nd minute Shane Treacy point was cancelled out two minutes later. With the sides level and time running out, Niall Treacy pointed in the 60th minute and substitute Johnno Clarke fired over in the fourth minute of injury time to see his side claim the two league points.

Micheal Hett, Cathal Higgins, Charlie Phillips, Colm Boyle, Cathal Corless, Shane Treacy, Evan Ronane and Niall Treacy were very impressive for Davitts in this game.

Davitts: Keith Prendergast, Micheal Hett, Cathal Higgins, Charlie Phillips, Aidan Macken, Colm Boyle, Dmitry Trench, Ronan McNamara, Fenton Kelly (0-1), Cathal Corless (0-2), Jack Ronayne (0-1), Shane Treacy (0-2), Evan Ronane (0-1), Darragh McGale, Niall Treacy (0-4). Sub used: Johnno Clarke (0-1).

South Mayo Junior semi-final match report

Garrymore 1-11  Davitts 1-11

This South Mayo Junior Championship semi-final kept the large attendance in Garrymore engrossed right up to the final whistle and, after a titanic struggle, both sides would have been happy with the draw.

Davitts got off to a good start with a fine point by Aidan Macken in the first minute. The next score didn’t come until the tenth minute, a scrambled Garrymore goal, with the Davitts goalkeeper David Mitchell getting injured in the process. Mitchell had to be replaced by John Kilkenny who proved to be a capable replacement for the rest of the game. Garrymore extended their lead with a 14th minute point but two excellent points from Darragh McGale and Johnno Clarke in the next three minutes narrowed the deficit to the minimum before Davitts captain Danny Corless goaled, finishing off a superb move involving Brian Clarke, Liam Kearns and Ryan McLoughlin, to put his side ahead.

A Garrymore point in the 22nd minute was matched by Brian Clarke two minutes later. Garrymore pointed in the 25th and 32nd minutes with Johnno Clarke and Cathal Corless doing likewise for Davitts, to leave the visitors ahead by 1-6 to 1-4 at half time. Davitts had missed a penalty late in that first half after Ryan McLoughlin’s kick was saved by the Garrymore keeper.

Garrymore opened the second half scoring, pointing after three minutes with Cathal Corless replying for Davitts in the 35th minute. Garrymore then assumed full control of the game and they reeled off six unanswered points between the 38th and 50th minutes to take a four point lead into the final ten minutes of the game. Davitts managed to regain their composure though and two points from Cathal Corless and one from Johnno Clarke left just one point between the teams as the finishing post loomed. Micheal Hett, Davitts enterprising corner back, proved to be his side’s hero with a fine point in the last minute, intercepting a ball 20 metres from the Garrymore goals and punching over the bar to tie the game.

Davitts had great performances from Micheal Hett, Charlie Phillips, Liam Macken, Aidan Macken, Johnno Clarke, Brian Clarke, Darragh McGale, Danny Corless and Cathal Corless.

Davitts: David Mitchell, Micheal Hett (0-1), Charlie Phillips, Jordan Flanagan, Liam Macken, Donie Ronayne, Brian Og McTigue, Shane Mitchell, Aidan Macken (0-1), Johnno Clarke (0-3), Liam Kearns, Brian Clarke (0-1), Ryan McLoughlin, Darragh McGale (0-1), Danny Corless (1-0). Senior v Belmullet match report

Belmullet 2-12   Davitts 0-8

Davitts unbeaten run in Div 2B of the Senior League came to an end in Belmullet on Saturday evening as the home side extended their winning league run. Belmullet, last year’s beaten County finalists, looked impressive at times but Davitts, despite having plenty of possession, lacked the penetration in attack to trouble them.

Belmullet opened the scoring with a point in the first minute but Jack Ronayne cancelled this out two minutes later. Belmullet shot two more points in the 13th and 17th minutes. They capitalised on two poor defensive errors to goal in the 18th and 21st minutes to put Davitts in real trouble. Two Jack Ronayne points narrowed the gap but first half injury time points from Belmullet saw them lead by 2-5 to 0-3 at the break.

After Belmullet opened the second half scoring with a 33rd minute point, Davitts held them scoreless for the next fourteen minutes, scoring two points themselves through Cathal Hennelly and Shane Treacy but failed to put away a number of goal chances. Belmullet pointed in the 47th and 50th minutes to extend their lead to nine points. Davitts were trying everything they could to break down a resolute home defence but couldn’t get the goal they needed to get into the game. Shane Treacy and Jack Ronayne scored two points for the visitors before the end but the home side tagged on three to cruise to a comfortable win.

Davitts will want to forget this game after a very flat performance. Aidan Macken impressed at wing back with good performances from Cathal Higgins, Thomas Ronayne and Shane Treacy in defence. There was no shortage of effort in the Davitts attack but they found it hard to make progress against a well organised home defence.

Davitts: Keith Prendergast, Brian Og McTigue, Cathal Higgins, Thomas Ronayne, Shane Treacy (0-2), Donie Ronayne, Aidan Macken, Johnno Clarke, Cathal Hennelly (0-1), Cathal Corless, Jack Ronayne (0-4), Fenton Kelly, Evan Ronane (0-1), Jack Melvin, Niall Treacy. Subs used: Liam Kearns, Ronan McNamara, Charlie Phillips, Darragh McGale, Liam Macken.

U-19 v Castlebar Mitchels match report

Davitts 0-12   Castlebar 2-8

Castlebar Mitchels U-19 team came to Ballindine for the opening round of the County A Championship on Tuesday evening and, after a great game of football, they snatched victory scoring a goal and three points in the last five minutes of a pulsating game.

Davitts played with the wind in the first period and after a few wides, shot the first two points of the game in the 5th minute through Fenton Kelly and Dylan Gallagher. Castlebar replied with a sixth minute goal and Davitts Conor McDermott equalised a minute later. The visitors pointed again in the 9th minute but well taken points by Cathal Corless and Fenton Kelly in the 13th and 14th minutes put Davitts ahead again. The Davitts defence were superb but in attack were very wasteful in this period shooting several wides and the more economical visitors pointed in the 18th and 23rd minutes to regain the lead. Indeed Castlebar could easily have scored a few goals but for some excellent goalkeeping by Lorcan Diskin. Davitts finished the half strongly however and points from Fenton Kelly and two from Cathal Corless left the homeside ahead by 0-8 to 1-3 at halftime.

A well fired up Davitts started the second half in great style and they extended their lead with points in the opening two minutes by Dylan Gallagher and Cathal Corless. Davitts were controlling the play well, with Fenton Kelly, Burke Briere, Conor McDermott, Thomas Ronayne, Dylan Gallagher and Cathal Corless very influencial, and the Castlebar attack weren’t seeing much ball. They did however shoot the next two points in the 42nd and 45th minutes to reduce the deficit to two points but two similar scores from the boot of Dylan Gallagher in the 47th and 53rd minutes restored Davitts four point lead.

Davitts were denied goals due to some great goalkeeping by the Mitchels keeper with the lively Fionn McLoughlin (twice) and Jack Melvin being thwarted. Castlebar began to throw everything they had at the homeside but were finding it extremely hard to breakdown a resolute defence. Two Mitchels points in the 60th and 61st minutes reduced the deficit to two points.  They narrowed the gap to the minimum in the 64th minute and from the resulting kickout disaster struck for the homeside. Castlebar won a turnover in the middle of the field and, after two quick passes and an unstoppable shot, they found the Davitts net for their second goal and a last gasp win.

This was a heart breaking defeat for Davitts who had played so well for most of the game. Poor shooting, especially with the aid of the wind in the first half, and a loss of concentration in second half injury time cost them dearly. They will now face Westport and Claremorris in the remaining two group games.

Davitts: Tristan Diskin, Brian Og McTigue, Micheal Hett, Brian Birmingham, Mark Birmingham, Thomas Ronayne, Sean Keadin, Burke Briere, Fenton Kelly (0-3), Conor McDermott (0-1), Cathal Corless (0-4), Jack Melvin, Fionn McLoughlin, Dylan Gallagher (0-4), Jack Devane. Subs used: Ethan Boyle, Aaron Trench.

Junior v Ballintubber match report

Davitts 1-14   Ballintubber 1-10

Davitts entertained previously unbeaten Ballintubber in Division 4A of the Senior league on Sunday and, after a fine display, came out on top by four points.

A first minute point by the visitors was matched by a similar score from Davitts energetic midfielder Aidan Macken in the second minute. A Jack Melvin point put Davitts ahead in the fifth minute but Ballintubber replied with a point of their own two minutes later. Shane Treacy fired over a trio of points between the 11th and 15th minutes but Ballintubber levelled matters with a well taken 18th minute goal that gave Davitts keeper John Kilkenny no chance of stopping. Ballintubber now had their tails up and they scored three unanswered points in the next five minutes. Two well taken Johnno Clarke points narrowed the gap to a point before Ballintubber pointed again just before the half time whistle to lead by 1-6 to 0-7 at the break.

Early second half points from Jack Melvin and Shane Treacy levelled the game. Shane Treacy put the home side ahead in the 38th minute but two quick replies saw the lead change hands again. Jack Melvin tied the game again in the 41st minute and we had to wait eight minutes for the next score, a well taken Jack Melvin goal to put Davitts into a three point lead. Ballintubber added two more points before the end of the game with Jack Melvin and Shane Treacy (2) completing the Davitts tally.

This win puts Davitts on top of the table, level on points with Ballintubber. All of the players that played in this game showed serious commitment with superb displays all over the field.  Brian Birmingham, Brian Clarke, Donie Ronayne, Liam Macken, Aidan Macken, Shane Treacy, Johnno Clarke and Jack Melvin were excellent in this game.

Davitts: John Kilkenny, Brian Birmingham, Brian Clarke, Brian Og McTigue, Jamie Mullee, Donie Ronayne, Liam Macken, Shane Mitchell, Aidan Macken (0-1), Shane Treacy (0-7), Johnno Clarke (0-2), Jack Melvin (1-4), Tommy Waldron, Darragh McGale, Danny Corless. Subs used: Micheal Hett, Lawrence Daly, Gary Bourke.
