Junior v Balla match report

Balla 4-2  Davitts 0-13

Davitts travelled to Balla on Saturday evening for a clash with the locals in the Mayo Junior B Championship and, after dominating for most of the game, managed to lose it, with the Balla lads scoring a goal directly from a 20 metre kick in the second minute of injury time, the last kick of the game. This was the first time in the game that Balla led, they timed their run to perfection, and fair play to them, they fought to the end, but Davitts will wonder just how they didn’t claim the spoils.

Davitts shot the first four scores of the game, points kicked by Jack Devane, Shane Treacy, Shane Mitchell and Ryan McLoughlin between the 5th and the ninth minute. A 10th minute goal from the homeside seemed like a minor hiccup as Davitts added another four points through Jack Melvin, Shane Treacy, Jack Devane and Cathal Corless before halftime, to lead by 0-8 to 1-0 at the break.

This lead was extended as points from Jack Devane, Jack Melvin and Cathal Corless put Davitts up by 0-11 to 1-0 as the game entered the final quarter. Balla goaled again in the 45th minute. Cathal Corless shot a Davitts point almost immediately but Balla kicked their first point in the 47th minute. Cathal Corless had another point in the 50th minute. A harsh black card for Davitts Jamie Mullee followed but Davitts conceded a very soft goal in the 53rd minute, not dealing with a 45 that dropped short. Balla, now sensing that they had a chance, pointed again in the 57th minute leaving just two points between the sides. Davitts seemed to be seeing the game out but the homeside were awarded a 20 metre free kick in injury time and after the well struck kick hit the back of the net, past about twelve Davitts players, the referee blew the final whistle to the delight of the home crowd and the most unlikely of victories.

In all fairness to Davitts, they played some great football in this game but the concession of the goals would be a concern. Brian Og McTigue, Shane Treacy, Donie Ronayne, James Cummins, Shane Mitchell, Jamie Mullee, Ryan McLoughlin, Jack Devane and Cathal Corless were impressive.

Davitts: David Mitchell, Brian Og McTigue, Lawrence Daly, Tom Corless, Shane Treacy (0-2), Donie Ronayne, James Cummins, Shane Mitchell (0-1), Johnno Clarke, Jack Melvin (0-2), Liam Kearns, Jamie Mullee, Ryan McLoughlin (0-1), John Kilkenny, Jack Devane (0-3). Subs used: Cathal Corless (0-4), Darragh McGale.

County U-16 B Semi-Final match report

Moy Davitts 3-13   Davitts 2-6

Moy Davitts advanced to the County U-16 B Final after defeating a gallant Davitts side in Kiltimagh on Tuesday evening in the semi-final. Two goals in the first five minutes of the game proved to be crucial scores for the Moy Davitts lads and while Davitts spurned several clear goal chances themselves throughout the game, the Foxford based outfit were full value for their victory and the best of luck to them in the final.

Moy Davitts shot two goals and a point in the opening five minutes to set them on their way. Ciaran Treacy, a major threat up front for Davitts, hit two points in the 6th and 7th minutes to settle his team into the game. The remainder of the first half was more or less dominated by the defences on both sides with Moy Davitts adding three points and Davitts two points, through Ronan Kelly and Ciaran Treacy, to their tallies to leave Moy Davitts ahead by 2-4 to 0-4 at half time.

Davitts had two great goal chances in the first two minutes of the second half with Aaron O Dea and Aaron Conneely Basham coming agonisingly close but Moy Davitts hit the first three scores in the 33rd, 35th and 36th minutes to extend their lead. Ciaran Treacy pulled a point back for Davitts in the 37th minute but this was cancelled out two minutes later and Moy Davitts pointed again in the 40th minute. Davitts, chasing the game, were looking for goals and Noah O Brien and Ciaran Treacy came very close before Ciaran Treacy pointed in the 47th minute. A goal and a point for Moy Davitts in the 50th minute put the issue beyond doubt and they added another point in the 52nd minute before Ciaran Treacy goaled from the penalty spot for Davitts. Moy Davitts shot two points in reply before Davitts sub Peter Kilkenny had the final say, goaling in the 62nd minute, just before the final whistle.

All of the Davitts players tried valiantly all through the game but had little luck. Their best players on the night were goalie Dylan O Brien, Brian Hett who was excellent throughout, Noah O Brien, Ethan Boyle, Conor McDermott, Ciaran Treacy, Aaron Conneely Basham, Dylan Gormally and Fionn McTigue.

Davitts: Dylan O Brien, Sean Clarke, Brian Hett, Tadhg Feerick, Noah O Brien, Ethan Boyle, Brian Corless, Conor McDermott, Burke Briere, Aaron Conneely Basham, Ronan Kelly (0-1), Ciaran Treacy (1-5), Aaron O Dea, Dylan Gormally, Michael Hyland Hughes. Subs used: Fionn McTigue, Oisin O Gara, Ben Corless, Peter Kilkenny (1-0), Cillian Kearns.

O Mara Cup v Kilmaine match report

Kilmaine 3-13

Davitts 1-13

A very sharp looking Kilmaine side took the spoils in this entertaining O Mara Cup tie played in ideal conditions in Kilmaine of Friday evening.

Davitts got off to a flying start shooting 1-2 in the opening five minutes, Cathal Hennelly and Jack Ronayne pointing and Ronan McNamara getting the goal, fisting in Dmitry Trench’s crossfield ball to the net. The remainder of the first half belonged to the homeside whose fitness levels and teamwork were very impressive. While Davitts could only manage another point, a 27th minute score from Jack Ronayne, Kilmaine tagged on 2-7 before the interval, with sloppy Davitts defensive play not helping the cause.

Davitts narrowed the gap with two early second half points through Ronan McNamara and Cathal Hennelly. Kilmaine were defending well and hit two points in the 38th and 40th minutes but a third goal for the home side in the 41st minute was a killer blow for Davitts. Cathal Corless (making his senior debut) and Liam Kearns pulled two back in the 43rd and 44th minutes but they were cancelled out by two similar Kilmaine scores in the 46th and 48th minutes. Davitts added on a further five points via Jack Ronayne (2), Ronan McNamara (2) and Liam Kearns before the finish but they could not breach the home defence for the goal(s) they needed. Kilmaine fired three more points in that period to claim the two O Mara Cup points.

There was no shortage of effort from Davitts with Colm Boyle and Jack Ronayne catching the eye and the forwards doing well but some defensive errors were well punished by the Kilmaine lads.

Davitts: Keith Prendergast, Ciaran Fahy, Cathal Higgins, Charlie Phillips, Thomas Ronayne, Colm Boyle, Dmitry Trench, Jack Ronayne (0-4), Johnno Clarke, Shane Treacy, Darragh McGale, Jack Melvin, Cathal Hennelly (0-2), Ronan McNamara (1-3), Liam Kearns (0-3). Subs used: Cathal Corless (0-1), Jack Devane.

South Mayo U-16 B Final match report

Davitts 5-9  Hollymount Carramore 1-9

Davitts captured the South Mayo U-16 B title in Ballindine on Tuesday evening after a hard fought victory over Hollymount Carramore.

Davitts started brightly with two points in the opening two minutes courtesy of Ronan Kelly and the very impressive Aaron Conneely Basham. The visitors came storming into the game and reeled off a goal and six points between the 6th and the 13th minutes. In the fourteenth minute Davitts got a lucky break when team captain Dylan O Brien’s 45 dipped and ended up in the HollyCarra net. Davitts added points via Aaron O Dea (2), Aaron Conneely Basham and Conor McDermott before Ciaran Treacy goaled just before half time, a neat finish after a superb pass from Conor McDermott, to put Davitts ahead by 2-6 to 1-6 at the interval.

HollyCarra opened the second half scoring with a 41st minute point but Davitts replied with a brilliant Aaron Conneely Basham goal two minutes later after great work from Noah O Brien and Ciaran Treacy. Ciaran Treacy added a point in the 45th minute which was cancelled out by a similar HollyCarra score five minutes later. Dylan Gormally and Aaron O Dea pointed in the 50th and 54th minutes and two goals from Conor McDermott and Ciaran Treacy in the 55th and 57th minutes finally ended the spirited HollyCarra challenge who shot the last score of the game, a 61st minute point.
