Catherine and Shane step down

Dr. Catherine Sweeney is stepping down in her roles, both as a committee member and as Healthy Club officer this year.
Catherine introduced new initiatives to the club such as the Health Eating programme, Physical Activity, Mental Health, Yoga and Mindfulness. She also introduced Cardiac Screening and CPR Training and Davitt’s became a Smoke Free Club. Thanks to her work Davitt’s GAA achieved Healthy Club Status in October 2019.
Catherine was immense this year in helping the club to deal with Covid-19, her advice and suggestionsled to a safer club environment.
Catherine’s husband Shane Halligan is also stepping down from the committee and his role as the Player Liaison officer.
All members of the Davitt’s committee want to thank them both for their tireless work and dedication over these past years. We wish her and Shane the best and hope sometime in the future they will return to the committee.

2020 AGM Healthy Club Officer’s report

Davitts GAA Healthy Club Officer Report 2020 – Dr Catherine Sweeney
GAA clubs reach into the heart of the communities they serve and are therefore powerful resources in promoting the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of our population at large. In recognition of this, the GAA developed The Healthy Club Project in partnership with Healthy Ireland, the HSE, the National Office for Suicide Prevention and Irish Life. This project is based on best national and international practice. It aims to create a healthy philosophy in clubs and facilitate them in supporting the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve by integrating health into their day-to-day activities making them hubs for health.
Along with 150 other clubs selected to participate in the Healthy Club Project across the 32 counties, Davitts GAA Club began their journey to becoming a Healthy Club in 2018. The executive committee valued the importance of this project and with their support and that of club members we engaged the community by hosting walking events as well as club talks on the importance of Health Eating, Physical Activity, Mental Health, Yoga and Mindfulness. We also held Cardiac Screening and CPR Training and became a Smoke Free Club. We achieved Healthy Club Status as part of the Healthy Club Project in October 2019.
Davitts GAA Club planned to continue their journey with the Healthy Club Project in 2020. However, Covid-19 changed the course of these plans. Despite this, the club was not found wanting and agreed that the safety of club members and the community at large was of paramount importance. At the onset of the pandemic, a number of steps that followed government guidelines were implemented such as education on the virus using HSE videos and posters on our Facebook page, signage on entrance to the pitch and clubhouse regarding mask use, respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene, placement of hand sanitisers throughout the clubhouse, guidelines for use of the gym and it’s equipment, guidelines for continuation of the club lotto and engagement with the community in partnership with Centra and Supervalu in providing groceries and prescriptions for vulnerable members of our community. The club also developed a walking track around the perimeter of the pitch as a facility for non-playing members to get some exercise and fresh air within the safe confines of the club grounds.
As 2020 draws to a close and we look to 2021 with the hope of a vaccine and a return to some semblance of normality, we as a club wish to support our members and the community in any way we can.
The following are tips in maintaining health for the remainder of the pandemic:
1. Eat a healthy balanced diet that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, and limit convenience foods and foods high in sugar, salt, and calories as well as caffeinated and fizzy drinks.
2. Limit alcohol intake to a minimum as it is a depressant and can alter mood and emotions as a result.
3. Exercise every day, whether it is a 30-minute walk or a 10K run, get out and get some fresh air.
4. Keep a structure to the day having a loose timetable for meals, work, exercise, relaxation, and get up and go to bed at the same time each day making sure to prioritise a good night’s sleep.
5. If you are working from home, make sure to take regular breaks from your phone and computer and ensure you have time to relax and unwind in the evenings once the workday has ended.
6. Limit news consumption, taking a break from newsfeeds and social media regularly, and only seek information from trusted sources such as the HSE.
7. Get creative by taking up a new hobby or revisiting an old one. Creative tasks such as painting, knitting, baking, gardening are all excellent ways of tending to our mental health needs.
8. Practice mindfulness by “staying in the moment” taking notice of your senses, feelings, and emotions.
9. Stay connected with family, friends and neighbours in a safe way through text messages, e-mails, phone calls, videocalls and social media, without forgetting the old-fashioned letters and post-cards.
10. Seek help from a healthcare professional such as your GP if it is all getting too much, where the right supports can be provided and accessed. Of note, the Samaritans are the GAA’s national mental health partner and can be contacted on 116123.
As I step down from my position as Healthy Club Officer at the end of this year, I wish to thank all committee and club members as well as members of the community and sponsors for their help and support over the last four years and wish Davitts GAA Club all the best for 2021.

2020 AGM Secretary’s Report

2020 was a year like no other Davitts had seen before. This was due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The challenges we had to meet as a club and community have been extremely difficult .I must commend the Senior players, committee members and club members who volunteered in the “Club together” initiative during the Covid -19 lockdowns , helping deliver groceries and prescriptions to the elderly and vulnerable in our community.
In the first few months of 2020 playing any type of football season was in serious doubt. However after the first lockdown, numbers of COVID-19 fell dramatically and thus opened a window for a shortened club season, one which was greatly welcomed by both players and supporters. It was disappointing that clubs in Mayo voted against running the league and instead opted for Michael Walsh competition.
2020 was our ninth season consecutive season in senior football. On the second of August we welcomed Moy Davitts to Davitt Park in conditions that were less than ideal for football. A heavy rain and strong breeze made for a tight and tense game. Davitt’s had the better first half and lead at the break 0-6 to 0-5. The match stayed close throughout, Davitt’s missed some opportunities to pull away during the match and will have felt another day they could have won. Moy Davitts though took their opportunities and kept the game close and deserved their draw.
A draw in the groups other game between Aghamore and Ballintubber left the group wide open. Davitt’s then travelled to Aghamore for their second game. Davitts had a sluggish start and this gave the home side a six point advantage which they never relinquished. Davitt’s battled well in the second half and brought the game within three points, but great Aghamore forward play saw them extend their lead in the final quarter and win 0-19 to 0-12.
Finally Davitt’s travelled to Ballinrobe to take on County champions Ballintubber in ther final group game. It was not our best game and poor decision making on the ball cost Davitts as Ballintubber showed their class and why they were county champions the previous year winning 1-16 to 0-5. Davitt’s placed third in their group and were safe from relegation.
I would like to thank our Senior Management team of Padraic Cosello, Joe Reapy, Paul Carey, Seamus Roache and Dara O Flaitharta for all their hard work and dedication. Most people don’t realise the amount of time and effort that goes into preparing and fielding a senior team these days.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Padraic Costello for all his work as he stepping down as senior manager after two years. In his first year we had a solid league campaign and an excellent championship campaign getting to our first senior quarter final in over twenty years. He has brought many young players into our senior team and we will reap the benefits of this in the years to come.
After relagation last year, our strong junior team would have had expectations of bouncing back to division four. This year due to Covid no league football was played in Mayo which was disappointing for all involved. A mixed year with a win away to Kilmaine and loses to Claremorris and Hollymount/ Carramore in the South Mayo championship. The Junior championship has been postponed due to the current lockdown. They will be hoping for more games next year in a league campaign to better prepare for championship. It is vital for our club to have a strong junior team to help young players develop and progress onto our senior team.
The minor team this year had an exceptional year. They had some tough games in their group . However once they got out of the group with each game they grew in confidence and skill. They defeated Carras in the South Mayo B final 3-12 to 0-10. In the county Semi Final they faced an extremely tough and dogged Cill Chomain. The game was well balanced for most but prevailed on a score line of 4-13 to 2-11.
In the County Minor B final they faced a strong Balla. Davitts set the pace right from the throw in and raced into an eight point lead, a lead which was never in doubt throughout the match. The football Davitt’s played that day was immense, the movement both on and off the ball, angles of running, quick transitions from defence to attack , it was a pleasure to watch. Davitt’s ran out comfortable winners 5-15 to 1-7.
A minor team bursting with such talent boasts well for the club going further. I would like to thank the management team of Liam Nyland, Derek Byrne, Lawrence Daly Jnr, Tommy Ronanye and Declan Kirrane for all their effort in training and preparing this team.
The U-16, U-14 and U-12 teams had mixed success this year, but all enjoyed the chance to play football and gained valuable experience. I would like to thank all the management teams over all the various teams in the club but especially the underage teams from U-6 all the way to minor. The time and hard work these people put into developing players from a young age is vital to the success of the club. Their work must never be underestimated. It takes a lot of dedication and time to train teams and I just want to remind them how much they are appreciated within the club. I would like to take this oppourtunity to thank all our various sponsors from the local community for their continued support. A special mention must go to two of our sponsors this year. One is Danny Mchugh owner of Supermacs Ballindine. Danny helped sponsor our new LED Scoreboard which is the envy of other clubs in the local area. Our other sponsor is of course our main sponsor P. Mchugh & Sons Builders who as always are extremely supportive of the club.
A big thanks to all our committee members and all the sub committees who work tirelessly to improve our facilities in the club. Our facilities are often commented on as excellent and this would not be the case without all your hard work. Every year we try and upgrade our facilities. This year works were completed on a new walkway for our members around the pitch. I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped in creating this walkway. A special thank you to Darren Mchugh who loaned machinery free of charge to complete the walkway. At the same time the pitch was widened and extended and I would like to thank Frank Fahey for his excellent work on this.
Thanks to John Noone for all his hard work on both the main and training pitch ,they are always in the best condition possible thanks to him. Thanks to Lucy Daly for the upkeep of the Clubhouse.
Thanks to Darragh McGale for all his work on the club’s upgraded website and to Joe Reapy for his work on the website and social media in his role as club PRO.
A Huge thank you to all our members who sold and bought the €100 Club and County Draw tickets, our numbers sold this year remain high and these help greatly to finance the club.
This year our Presto was suspended due to Covid-19 in the interests of community safety for a few months. I would like to thanks to all who sell tickets for our Presto and those that support the Presto every week. Unfortunately Presto sales have fallen due to Covid-19 and inability to sell face to face in businesses and bars. I would ask members to please support our Presto online .Members can sign up online through our website https://davittsgaa.com/presto-lotto/ .The support we get from the local community is immense and it is greatly appreciated.
Thanks to Garryowen McMahon for representing the club as a referee and to his team of umpires.
Davitt’s GAA would Like to extend sympathies to all those with connections to the club who passed away this year.
A special mention must go to the members of the Senior team who ran a very well organised Last Man Standing Competition. They managed to raise a significant sum of money which will be used to purchase gym equipment to further enhance our excellent gym facilities.
At the time of writing this report we have no senior management in place but are currently looking for a manager who will provide the necessary discipline, organisation, coaching and game management that will allow us to strengthen our position as a senior team. The recruitment process to appoint a new Senior Manager is currently underway; we hope to have this in place in the coming weeks.
I would like to wish Colm Boyle and the Mayo team the very best of luck in the All Ireland Final.
In closing I hope 2021 brings a quick roll out of the vaccine and elimination of Covid-19 in our country, a return to normality both in our community and the GAA and a successful season for Davitt’s GAA at Senior , Junior and underage levels. I wish all members a healthy and happy 2021.

2020 AGM Chairman’s Address

2020 AGM. The Chairman’s Address:
2020 has been a very challenging year for the GAA and club activity. We started out the year with great expectations but that was not to be as Covid 19 struck.
The senior league was called off which was a massive blow as we expected to go to Division 2. All club activity was postponed to the end of July and the Senior championship was run off. We managed to hold on to our senior status. I would like to thank the Senior and Junior Management Teams as well as the players for their effort.
Our underage had a great year but the highlight for me was the minors winning the B championship. It’s a testimony to the Bord na Nog, to the managers, selectors and everybody involved with all the teams at underage.
John Costello came on board as secretary of the club in February. We are delighted that he took this position and he is really competent in this role. I have to thank Niamh for all she has done also.
Our club lotto was also put on hold due to Covid 19 early in the year. However the finance committee have changed and adapted their practices in selling tickets and doing the lotto draw every Sunday and as a result, we are still one of the most successful lottos in the county. We are very lucky to have such a dedicated club presto committee. Thank you to all our members who purchased tickets for the Club and County Draw. These monies together with the presto form a large part of our financial coffers. A special mention to the Senior Team who raised funds through their “last man standing” fundraiser. It was a great success. These monies are going towards gym equipment for our hall.
This year we also got the pitch made longer and wider and the walkway around the pitch completed and I just want to say a big thanks to McHugh’s Builders and all the volunteers who helped out. I also want to thank McHugh’s Builders as the main sponsor and all other sponsors of the club. I would urge our members to shop local and continue to support our local businesses who are the backbone of our community.
We also got the carpark and roadway tarmacadamed down at the old pitch.
Our website was also upgraded this year and I would like to thank Joe Reapy and Darragh McGale for their work. I want to thank all the businesses that purchased signs which are on show around the pitch.
I want to thank Danny Mc Hugh, Supermacs for his sponsorship of the new scoreboard at the pitch. This is a state of the art scoreboard.
I want to thank the building committee for all the work they have put in.
I want to thank John Noone our groundsman for all the work he has done in keeping the pitches in such good shape.
Now that Mayo have reached the All Ireland Final I want to wish Colm and all the Mayo panel and management the very best of luck.
Finally, I hope that Covid 19 will be over in the next few months and things will get back to normal. I wish you all a healthy and happy 2021.
