Seniors v Ballaghaderreen – Match Report

Davitts 1-16 Ballaghaderreen 2-15

Davitts and Ballaghaderreen put their 100% Senior League Division 1B records on the line in sunny Ballindine on Sunday with the visitors emerging victorious after a superb game of attacking football.

Davitts, with the assistance of the wind, got off to a flying start with points from Colm Boyle, the excellent Michael Conroy (2) and Josh Ronayne in the first seven minutes. The visitors settled down and good points from Barry Regan (2) and impressive midfielder Owen Jordan left the minimum between the sides by the 13th minute. Conroy and Regan swapped points before Liam Kearns put Davitts two up. Davitts points from Josh Ronayne, Liam Kearns (2) and Aidan McTigue with Regan and Thomas Carmody replying for the visitors left the locals ahead by 0-10 to 0-6 at halftime.

Ballaghaderreen dominated the third quarter of the match with points from Barry Regan (5), Keith O Donnell and Thomas Carmody and an eighth minute goal from Carmody with Davitts sole reply coming in the form of a Michael Conroy point. Davitts lost the inspirational Colm Boyle through injury but points from Conroy, Kearns and Ronayne narrowed the gap to two points again before disaster struck for the homeside. A Davitts lineball was intercepted ending in Gavin Conway gleefully hammering home his side’s second goal to go five points clear with twelve minutes remaining. Davitts responded well with Aidan McTigue firing to the net after Keith Prendergast’s piledriver was superbly saved by Ballagh keeper Owen Flanagan. An Evan Ronayne point in the 24th minute narrowed the gap to one point. Barry Regan increased the lead to two and Cathal Hennelly for Davitts and Ballagh’s Peter Kelly swapped points before the end.

U-16’S V The Neale – Match Report

Davitts 5-15 The Neale 4-9 (AET)

Davitts U-16’s and The Neale met in Ballindine for the second time in a month in Division 3 of the League, this time in the semi-final. On the previous occasion the visitors were victors by a few points and this time with eight minutes remaining on the clock, a similar outcome seemed inevitable, but nobody told the plucky Davitts lads.

A storming last eight minutes from the homeside, yielding an unanswered 1-4, tied the match and Davitts went on to totally boss their hosts in the extra time of a superb match.

The Neale had led by 3-3 to 2-4 at halftime of normal time and had extended their lead and were looking like the likely winners until Davitts burst into life in the closing minutes.

The repositioning of Davitts wing back David Devane, who bagged 2-1 when moved to the full forward line, was crucial towards this victory. The outstanding Jordan Flanagan, Takeshi Kilkenny, teak tough Dimitri Trench and Oisin O Connor defended very well. Midfielders Cian Naughton and Niall Kearns were at times inspirational, with Kearns coming into his own in extra time after suffering a heavy knock late in the first half of normal time. Up front James Ruane, Dean Moran (who scored a super goal in extra time) and Fentan Kelly worked hard throughout while Stephen Nyland and Niall Treacy were excellent in the corner forward positions. Zack Keadin also did very well when he was introduced.

Davitts: Shane Cummins, Jordan Flanagan, Takeshi Kilkenny, David Devane (2-1), Dimitri Trench, Oisin O Connor, Cian Naughton (0-1), Niall Kearns (0-3), James Ruane (0-1), Dean Moran (1-0), Fentan Kelly, Stephen Nyland (1-5), Niall Treacy (1-4). Sub used: Zack Keadin.

Juniors v Crossmolina – Match Report

Davitts junior team travelled to Crossmolina on Saturday evening and came away with the two Senior League Div 1D points on offer after a hard earned 4-4 to 1-6 victory. The homeside had led by 0-5 to 1-1 at the break and the visitors looked to be in big trouble but a super second half performance by the whole team swung the game in Davitts favour.

A neat Gerald Griffin point and a well converted penalty kick by Liam Noone accounted for Davitts first half scores. The defence was under a lot of pressure but coped well with the outstanding Patrick Keadin and JP Kirrane in excellent form.

A Davitts goal ten minutes into the second half finished by the hard working Shane Treacy put them ahead. Crossmolina responded well and equalised but then the Mitchell brothers Shane and Tommy (not Grant and Phil) began to dominate at midfield. Davitts took control of the game and three classy points by Seamus Roche and Liam Noone (2) and two superbly worked goals converted by Richie Kilkenny and Liam Noone gave Davitts a hard earned but deserved victory.

Davitts had outstanding performers throughout the field with man of the match Patrick Keadin, Lawrence Daly, JP Kirrane, Shane Mitchell, Liam Noone, Gerald Griffin and Matthew Trench to the fore.

U-14’s v Charlestown – Match Report

Davitts U-14’s maintained their 100% winning record in the League with an impressive 6-11 to 3-6 away victory against the previously unbeaten Charlestown on Thursday evening. Once again the Davitts boys, much smaller than their opponents in most positions on the field, produced some sparkling attacking football, especially in the first half, and had raced into a 4-8 to 0-3 at the interval. Jack Trench, Jack Devane, Niall Treacy and Zack Keadin had scored the goals with Sean Feerick (2), Jack Devane (3) and Jack Trench (3) pointing.

Charlestown staged a second half revival but Davitts remained composed and the deadly Jack Trench tagged on another 2-3 to cap a splendid display.

Gavin Ring was excellent in goals and in front of him Micheal Hett and Brian Og McTigue defended superbly as did the half back line trio of Fionan Gallagher, Thomas Ronayne and Charlie Phillips. Fentan Kelly and Sean Feerick put in powerful displays at midfield. Niall Treacy was involved in everything at centre forward with the dynamic Zack Keadin and Joe Prendergast completing an impressive half forward line. In the corners Davitts had two trump cards (a pair of Jacks) with Jack Devane and Jack Trench in terrific scoring form. Subs Cathal Corless, Davy Hennessy and Brian Birmingham had their moments when introduced in the second half.

Seniors v Shrule Glencorrib – Match Report

Shrule Glencorrib 2-11 Davitts 0-17

Davitts and Shrule Glencorrib met in the O Mara Cup in Glencorrib on Friday evening with the sides ending up all square after an exciting match. The homeside were quick off the blocks and raced into a 1-1 to 0-0 lead after three minutes. Wind assisted Davitts got on top for the remainder of the first half and led by 0-13 to 1-4 at half time after some high quality points from Liam Kearns (4), Josh Ronayne (4), Aidan McTigue (3), Keith Prendergast and Johnno Clarke. Declan Healy was a powerful performer at midfield for Davitts and he got good assistance from Michael Waldron, Micheal Mangan, Keith Prendergast and Johnno Clarke around the middle of the field.

Shrule upped the ante considerably in the second half and chipped away at the lead. Davitts responded with nice points from Evan Ronayne, Aidan McTigue and Liam Kearns but a second Shrule Glencorrib goal left just a point separating the teams with seven minutes remaining. The homeside got the scent of blood and two points had them ahead with time running out. Davitts were reeling but dug deep and in one final attack they were awarded a free kick which Liam Kearns converted to earn his side a draw, probably a fair result over the course of the game.

Colm Roche, Declan Healy, Micheal Mangan, Evan Ronayne, Liam Kearns and the lively Aidan McTigue played very well for Davitts.
