Noone vs. The Japs: The Saga Continues…

Noone & weed

Just when it appeared that the scourge of GAA Grounds the length and breadth of the country had been eradicated…news has broken today that Clare GAA will not be able to proceed with the development of a 200-space car park beside Cusack Park until a Japanese Knotweed problem is dealt with.

Most people connected with Davitts GAA Club will recall the titanic battle that ensued between the dreaded botanical pest and Davitts Head Groundsman (and toxic chemical specialist) John A. Noone in September 2011. The outbreak of the Japanese Knotweed at Davitt Park at that time put the new Clubhouse development under serious risk. For those who need to refresh their memories of the 2011 incident, click here.

While our friends in Clare employed a Northern Irish Company last year to try and eradicate the invaders, they have yet to come to grips with the problem. This is in stark contrast to the fortunes of Davitts, who are fortunate to have a Head Groundsman who is well versed in the principles of toxicology and has an arsenal of highly noxious chemical agents at his disposal. It took Noone just three weeks to obliterate his oriental nemesis.

Clare County Board Chairman Michael McDonagh said “We have to take the proper time to do it. The advice we’ve got is that if you just dig it up or ignore it or build over it, it’s basically infectious and will spread. People mightn’t have heard of it, but it’s quite a big problem and I believe it’s fairly serious in the UK [and in a part of South Mayo?]. The bottom line for us is that we’re not going to put in any car park until we have it cleared in full.”

While the Banner County’s building plans have had to be potentially postponed until 2020, the Davitts GAA development is currently in full swing. The differing fortunes between both parties has prompted preliminary negations between legal teams representing Davitts GAA Club and Clare Co. Board to discuss the possible secondment of Noone down to Ennis on a temporary basis. Initial reports from the negotiations indicate that Clare Co. Board are willing to provide Noone with the incentive of a high powered vehicle to expedite his journeys between Ballindine and Ennis.

Club Development Plan & Croke Park €10 Ticket – Launch

Strategic-Planning

Next Saturday (15th November) sees Davitts launch their Club Strategic Plan and €10 Croke Park ticket scheme.

The Club Strategic Plan (CSP) is a plan outlining our club’s plans off the field for the next five years. The CSP was facilitated by Frank Cloherty from the County Board and Chaired by County Board Delegate Sean Higgins.

The process involved members of the Club Committee, Senior team players, underage managers, the two National Schools & Davitts Ladies. The CSP is an important document outlining areas for consideration over the set time frame.

The €10 Croke Park ticket scheme is an initiative by GAA Headquarters to help clubs raise funds. This year clubs can sell up to 2,000 tickets. Our club plans on making a concerted effort to sell as many of these tickets as possible. Every euro from these ticket sales will go directly into the club building fund as the club are currently well underway to building a new facility at Davitt Park.

This state of the art facility is not just for the club but for the parish and we aim to foster relationships with all groups/committees in the locality. The club also plans to develop a running/walking track around the perimeter of the pitch providing a safe and secure outlet for people to exercise in the parish.

Davitts would like to welcome everyone to Jackie’s Bar next Saturday November 15th to join the club in moving forward in a positive and welcoming manner.

U-21’s v Kiltimagh – Match Report

Davitts participation in the County U-21 B Championship ended on Sunday when they were defeated, 0-15 to 0-8, by a strong Kiltimagh side in Claremorris. On a day when very little went Davitts way they fought to the end but it was Kiltimagh who advanced to the Semi-Final.

Kiltimagh led by 0-7 to 0-4 at halftime with Matthew Trench (2), Darren Connolly and Thomas Waldron getting the Davitts scores. Davitts shot the opening points of the second half through Thomas Waldron and Matthew Trench to narrow the gap to a single point but this was as close as they got as Kiltimagh powered away. They added eight fine points with Darren Connolly and Andrew Peters notching two for Davitts before the end.

Best for Davitts were Donal and Mark Ronayne, William Freeley, Thomas Waldron and Gerald Griffin.

Davits: David Mitchell, Donal Ronayne, Cathal Higgins, Mark Ronayne, Padraig Mangan, Jack Rodgers, Sean Waldron, William Freeley, Matthew Trench (0-3), Andrew Peters (0-1), Thomas Waldron (0-2), Darren Connolly (0-2), Gerald Griffin. Subs used: Michael Mangan, Patrick Keadin, Shane Treacy.

Seniors v Kiltane – Match Report

Kiltane 2-9

Davitts 1-12

Davitts Senior Team finished their season off with a draw away to Kiltane in Division 1A of the League. This point means that Davitts ended up in 4th position in the League. Both teams were missing a number of regulars but they served up a very competitive match in the miserable weather conditions. Davitts lost their reliable corner back Kevin Gallagher in the opening minutes of the game with a shoulder injury but his replacement Lawrence Daly had a fine game.

Davitts started off well and shot the opening two points through Liam Kearns and Keith Prendergast. Kiltane grabbed two goals and went in ahead by 2-6 to 0-7 at halftime. Matthew Trench (2), Ronan McNamara, Patrick Keadin and Liam Kearns got the other first half scores for the visitors.

Davitts midfielder Ronan McNamara shot two trademark long range points early in the second half and when Aidan McTigue hammered home a fine goal after ten minutes to tie the match it looked like Davitts would go on to win. Kiltane showed admirable fighting qualities against the wind and they scored the next two points. Kearns narrowed the gap but Kiltane pointed again to go two clear. Matthew Trench and Kearns scored again in the closing minutes as both sides shared the spoils in a game that neither side deserved to lose.

All of the Davitts players deserve great credit for their displays. Adrian McNamara produced a few top class saves. In front of him Cathal Higgins, Donal Ronayne and Lawrence Daly were tigerish in their defending. The half back line of team captain Colm Roche, Padraig Mangan and Mark Ronayne defended well and bombed forward at every opportunity. Ronan McNamara (0-3) and Keith Prendergast (0-1) were a very effective midfield pairing. The Davitts attack produced some excellent moves with Liam Kearns (0-4), Thomas Waldron, Matthew Trench (0-3), Aidan McTigue (1-0), Andrew Peters and debutante Patrick Keadin (0-1) all in flying form.

All at the Club wish Kevin Gallagher a speedy recovery.
