Minors v Ballinrobe – Match Report

Ballinrobe 4-6  Davitts 2-8

Davitts Minors travelled to Ballinrobe on Sunday and were defeated by four points, after a lively league game. The sides were level with five minutes remaining in the first half but two goals in rapid sucession by the homeside gave them a flattering six point lead at the break, 4-3 to 1-6. Davitts goalscorer was Richie O Connor with Evan Ronayne bagging five excellent points and O Connor getting the other.

The quality of play deteriorated in the second half with tempers fraying and the referee having a very poor day. Some of his decisions were baffling to the frustration of Davitts players, selectors and supporters. Gerald Griffin pointed but Ballinrobe extended their lead with two good points. The dismissal of Davitts midfielder Padraig Mangan was a big blow but a fine Patrick Keadin goal narrowed the gap to four points. Davitts fought to the finish as both teams added a point to their tallies. Ballinrobe ran out the deserving winners but Davitts will know that they can play much better than this.

Davitts best players were Thomas Monaghan, Dylan Keadin, Patrick Keadin, Richie O Connor, Evan Ronayne and Gerald Griffin.

Davitts: Thomas Monaghan, Michael Mangan, Dylan Higgins, Dylan Keadin, Jack Rodgers, Patrick Keadin (1-0), Padraig Mangan, Seanie Bourke, Richie O Connor (1-1), Cathal Hennelly (0-1), Shane Treacy, Gerald Griffin (0-1), Evan Ronayne (0-5). Subs used: John Kilkenny, Denis Fahy.

Davitts U-14 team hosted a very impressive Mayo Gaels team in their first league game of the season. The visitors proved to be too strong for the Davitts boys and won comfortably. Gaels made the early running and had 2-2 on the scoreboard before Cian Naughton opened Davitts account. Stephen Nyland pointed and Naughton added a goal and a point before the break but the Gaels were full value for their 4-3 to 1-3 halftime lead.

The visitors pulled away in the second half, adding 1-7 to their tally. Davitts only second half scores came from Nyland and Naughton.

Minors v Westport – Match Report

Davitts 2-10 Westport 3-4

Davitts Minors got their League campaign off to a great start with a hard earned three point victory over Westport in Bekan on Wednesday evening. Early second half points from Padraig Mangan and Dylan Higgins were followed by a fine Gerald Griffin goal after good work from Ritchie O Connor and Evan Ronayne, to put Davitts five points ahead. Davitts v Ballaghaderreen – MW League Quarter Final

Davitts 2-7 Ballaghaderreen 0-12

Davitts earned a dramatic victory in this Michael Walsh Senior League quarter final with County Minor Cathal Hennelly bagging a goal with the last kick of the game played in sunny Ballindine on Sunday.

Ballaghaderreen, playing against the wind in the first half, looked the likely winners of this game in the first half. They led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the break, although some dreadful shooting by the Davitts forwards wasn’t helping the cause. Two Josh Ronayne points and one from Ronan McNamara accounted for Davitts paltry tally going in at halftime.

Facing the stiff wind in the second half was bad enough but a 3rd minute black card for midfielder Ronan McNamara, after he had narrowed the gap with a trademark long range free, could have caused heads to drop in the youthful Davitts team. The opposite was the case as the home team showed commendable spirit for the rest of the game.

Ballagh extended their lead to three but the alert Matthew Trench pounced on an error in the Ballagh defence to net the equaliser with twenty minutes remaining. Ballagh tagged on five points with Davitts replying through Padraig Mangan and Keith Prendergast to leave the gap at three points with time running out. Thomas Waldron left two between them as the game approached injury time. With seconds remaining Josh Ronayne rattled the crossbar with a shot with the rebound falling to young Cathal Hennelly who gleefully hammered in the winner.

Best for a young Davitts side on this occasion were Padraig Mangan, Mark Ronayne, James Cummins, Cathal Higgins, Paul Carey, Thomas Waldron, Matthew Trench and Michael Waldron.

Davitts: Adrian McNamara, Colm Roche, Padraig Mangan (0-1), Mark Ronayne, James Cummins, Keith Prendergast (0-1), Cathal Higgins, Ronan McNamara (0-2), Sean Waldron, Seamus Roche, Paul Carey, Thomas Waldron (0-1), Josh Ronayne (0-2), Fearghal McGrath, Liam Kearns.

Subs used: Matthew Trench (1-0), Michael Waldron, Cathal Hennelly (1-0), Michael Mangan, Jack Rodgers.

Host Families for Féile – please register your interest ASAP

Davitts are in need to families to volunteer to host between 2-4 players for Féile on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of June 2014. As Féile will not be back in Mayo for another 17 or 18 years, it would be a shame to deny our young club players the opportunity to play in this superb tournament.

Host families need to register their interest by this weekend (23rd March). Contact R. Kirrane, L. Nyland or D. Byrne for further info.
