Cummins aims to make a good fist of dishing it out…

Davitts senior player James Cummins who currently has stewardship of the Rendezvous pub, has now also taken over running of the restaurant at the back of the premises (as if he hadn’t already enough on his… plate). As most people will know, James is no stranger to dishing it out, so we expect he’ll take to the culinary business like a duck to water. The restaurant is open daily from 10am to 8pm, so if you are travelling through Balla why not drop in and sample some of the delightful ‘slap-up meals’ that James has spent years perfecting, such as:

  • Battered Cod (James does all his own ‘battering’)
  • The ‘knuckle’ sandwich (specially reserved for a select group of travelling parties)
  • James also likes to serve up ‘just desserts’ to deserving individuals

Of course, the Rendezvous bar and restaurant is not a one man show. Maître d’ Mick Cuffe and the ‘hostess with the most-ess’ Karen Bell are always on hand to cater for hungry patrons. The dual-use premises also means that it’s not just the food that can get steamed one day, and then cured the next!

Best of luck on your venture into the world of cuisine James, we’re sure you’ll will make a good fist of it!

Minors advance to South ‘A’ Final – Match Report

Davitts and Carras served up an enthralling game of football in front of a large attendance in Garrymore on Thursday evening in the South Mayo “A” Semi-Final, with Davitts edging out the Garrymore/Kilmaine amalgamation by 0-15 to 0-13 after extra time. There was little to separate  the two sides throughout but Davitts greater teamwork just swung it for them. The game was finished in near darkness, with players dropping like flies with cramp and the odd handbag outburst here and there, but credit must go to both sides for producing such an exciting match.

Davitts shaded the first half of normal time and led by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break with Michael Clarke providing three of the points and Matthew Trench, Liam Noone and Thomas Waldron completing the tally. Carras fought back impressively in the second half and went two points up with ten minutes remaining before Liam Noone and Michael Clarke pointed to send the game into extra time, Clarke’s point coming from a pressure free kick after the impressive Padraig Mangan was fouled in the dying seconds. That left the score at 0-10 each at the end of normal time.

The first period of extra time saw Carras go two points up again but late Davitts scores from Matthew Clarke, Gerald Griffin and Liam Noone had them in front at the turnaround. Carras levelled it in the second half but points from the superb Donal Ronayne and Matthew Trench gave Davitts a deserved victory. They will now play the winners of the Claremorris v Ballinrobe semi-final.

There were stars throughout the Davitts team with Michael and Padraig Mangan, William Freeley, Donal Ronayne, Cathal Hennelly, Thomas Waldron, Liam Noone, Matthew Trench and Michael Clarke excelling

Davitts: Michael Mangan, Dylan Keadin, William Freeley, John Huane, Jack Rogers, Donal Ronayne (0-1), Cathal Hennelly, Padraig Mangan, Thomas Waldron (0-3), Liam Noone (0-3), Matthew Trench (0-3), Evan Ronayne, Richie Connor, Michael Clarke (0-4), Gerald Griffin (0-1). Sub used: Patrick Keadin.

Official Rules of Last Man Standing

Last Man Standing

Official Rules of Last Man Standing below:

  • It’s simple; just pick the winner of one (1) Premier League match each week. If your selection wins you progress to the next week, lose or draw (see point 2) and you’re out.
  • For just one round of fixtures you are allowed to nominate the win AND the draw. This means that if you select Team A with Draw and Team A wins or draws then you are through to the next round.
  • Once a selection is made, you will not have the ability to change it.
  • You may not pick the same team to win more than once during the tournament (unless the competition progresses past 20 weeks).
  • All selections must be received no later than midday on the day of the first match of the week. For midweek rounds where the first game kicks off at 7.45pm or later, all selections must be in by 7pm. All picks are to be sent to davittsgaa11@gmail.com or by text to 087-7931361
  • Should you forget to make your selection in any week, you will automatically be assigned the first team that you have not selected in alphabetical order. Once a team is automatically selected, you will not have the ability to change the selection.
  • In the event that any match involving a team you have selected is postponed or cancelled for any reason, you will continue to the next round. However, that team will no longer be available for selection.
  • Rounds of fixtures may take place on weekends or mid-week, depending on available fixtures. Each participant will be sent an email and or text message at the beginning of each week with the games and teams to choose from.
  • The winner will be the ‘Last Man Standing‘… the person who has correctly picked a winning team every week and is the only person left in the competition
  • An email and or text message will be sent out every game week to each participant outlining the status of all the participants in the competition.
  • It is 10 euro a man (payable to any member of the Davitts GAA Club committee).

Juniors v Killala – Match Report

Davitts secured two valuable Senior League Div 1D points with a very impressive five point victory over Killala, 2-12 to 1-10, in Ballindine on Saturday evening. Davitts, with the assistance of the wind, were playing second fiddle to Killala for the first quarter and trailled by 1-1 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes. The homeside then assumed full control of the game until the break and led by 1-9 to 1-3 at the interval with Andrew Peters, the best player on the field, Thomas Waldron, William Freeley, Brian Clarke, Donal Ronayne, Lawrence Daly and Johnno Clarke leading the charge. Sean Waldron bagged the first half goal after excellent work by Darren Connolly.

Killala started the second half impressively but some poor shooting and a few terrific David Mitchell saves frustrated them before Andrew Peters, soccer style, emphatically finished Davitts second goal which effectively killed off the game with fifteen minutes remaining. Davitts are now right in the mix for promotion from this division in the league as this young team continue to show some real quality.

Davitts: David Mitchell, Brian Clarke, Michael Waldron, William Freeley, Donal Ronayne, Cathal Higgins, Lawrence Daly, Johnno Clarke (0-2), Tommy Mitchell, Liam Noone (0-3), Seamus Roche, Andrew Peters (1-5), Darren Connolly (0-2), Sean Waldron (1-0), Thomas Waldron. Subs used: Mark Ronayne, Carlos O Gara, Michael Ronayne, John Costello, Cathal Hennelly.
