Castlebar Mitchells 3-12 Davitts 0-5 – Match Report

Castlebar easily accounted for Davitts in this Mayo senior League Div 1A tie played in Castlebar on Sunday. The Mitchells outplayed the visitors for most of the game and, but for some bad shooting, they could have won by an even bigger margin. That said, Davitts had gifted them three goals towards the end of the first half and Shane Hopkins, the evergreen Kevin Filan and Aidan Walsh gratefully accepted them for the homeside to leave the Mitchells ahead by 3-5 to 0-2 at the interval.

Davitts were more competitive in the second half but midfielder Paul Carey was really the only player to take the game to the hosts. To add to Davitts woes, star defender Colm Boyle had to retire with a hamstring injury in the second half. The game petered out to its inevitable conclusion as Castlebar displayed that they will be a powerful force in Mayo football this season.

Outstanding for Castlebar were Donal Newcombe, Richie Feeney, Danny Kirby, Aidan Walsh, Eamon Tiernan, Fergal Durcan, Kevin Filan and sub Tom King.

Colm Boyle, Cathal Higgins, Thomas Waldron, Andrew Peters, Fearghal McGrath and sub Donal Ronayne did their best to assist Paul Carey for Davitts.

Castlebar: Ciaran Naughton, Donal Newcombe, Owen Reilly, Alan Flynn, Ronan Burke, Richie Feeney, Mark McHugh, Danny Kirby (0-2), Aidan Walsh (1-3), Eamon Tiernan (0-2), Fergal Durcan, Shane Hopkins (1-0), Shane Dolan, Kevin Filan (1-1), Neil Douglas (0-1). Subs used: Tom King (0-3), Shane Irwin, Cian Costello.

Davitts: David Mitchell, Colm Roche, Cathal Higgins, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, James Cummins, Colm Boyle, Ronan McNamara (0-3), Paul Carey, Thomas Waldron, Keith Prendergast, Andrew Peters, Josh Ronayne (0-1), Fearghal McGrath (0-1), Liam Kearns. Juniors v Ballintubber – Match Report

Ballintubber B 1-9  Davitts B 1-5.

Davitts very youthful junior team suffered their first taste of defeat this year in Clogher on Saturday evening. Most present at this game would agree the result doesn’t accurately reflect what happened over the course of the match. With the game already gone past the two minutes injury time that the referee was allotting, Davitts were leading by 1-4 to 0-6. Unfortunately for Davitts (and to the delight of the home crowd) the ref decided to play on for another six minutes. Ballintubber, to be fair to them, played to the final whistle, and when it finally did come, were happy to accept the two league points.

Davitts had led by 1-2 to 0-3 at half time although playing against the wind in the first half. It has to be said that both team’s forwards were guilty of some poor shooting in that period although Darren Connolly would not fall into that category, having accounted for all of Davitts first half tally.

Davitts appeared to be in control for most of the second half but the dismissal of Carlos O Gara and a serious looking facial injury to Michael Ronayne seemed to unsettle them. After three minutes of injury time Ballintubber equalised, to the delight of their crowd and management. They were on top at this stage and a draw seemed a fair result. In the ensuing five minutes of “added on time” they took the lead, Davitts equalised with a tremendous Thomas Waldron point, Ballintubber got another point and finished the game off with a goal in the eighth minute of injury time, the last play of the game.

This game will be a good lesson for the Davitts team. Ballintubber were more streetwise and rightly grabbed the game at the finish when the chance came to them. Only their most biased supporters will suggest though that they were not very lucky to win.

Davitts had tremendous performances from all of the team and it would be wrong to single out any individuals in a very encouraging display.

Davitts team: David Mitchell, William Freeley, Michael Ronayne, Donal Ronayne, Mark Ronayne, James Cummins, Laurence Daly, Tommy Mitchell (0-1), Michael Waldron, Andrew Peters, Seamus Roche (0-1), Carlos O Gara, Darren Connolly (1-2), Clive Hennigan, Richie Kilkenny. Subs used: Cathal Higgins, Thomas Waldron (0-1).

Minors v Belmullet – Match Report

Davitts minor team, although below par, retained their undefeated status in Ballindine on Friday evening, drawing with Belmullet. The final score of 1-7 each was just about the right result as neither team deserved to lose.

Belmullet made full use of the strong wind in the first half and led by 1-5 to 0-1 coming up to halftime but a Liam Noone point and a cracking goal from attacking wing back Jack Rodgers left just three points between the sides at the break. In that first Davitts switched corner forward Cathal Hennelly back to the half back line and he proved to be very influencial in his new station.

Davitts owned the ball in the opening ten minutes of the second half but poor shooting meant that the scoreboard remained unaltered. Points from Thomas Waldron, Liam Noone and Gerald Griffin tied the game before midfielder Waldron scored a beauty off his left boot to put Davitts ahead for the first time, with ten minutes remaining. Belmullet showed great character to equalise but Davitts took the lead again through the impressive Gerald Griffin. In a welter of excitement, Belmullet equalised again on the stroke of full time, after a goalmouth scramble.

Best for Davitts in this game were Donal Ronayne, Jack Rodgers, Padraig Mangan, Thomas Waldron, William Freeley, Cathal Hennelly, Liam Noone and Gerald Griffin.

Davitts team: Michael Mangan, Dylan Keadin, Donal Ronayne, Dylan Higgins, Jack Rodgers (1-0), Padraig Mangan, John Huane, William Freeley, Thomas Waldron (0-2), Michael Clarke, Liam Noone (0-3), Evan Ronayne, Cathal Hennelly, Matthew Trench, Gerald Griffin (0-2). Sub: Patrick Keadin.

Davitts Seniors Div 1A v Crossmolina – Match Report

Davitts 1-13  Crossmolina 1-10 – Referee: Ronan Gurren

Davitts edged out Crossmolina in this Mayo Senior League Div 1A tie played in blustery conditions in Ballindine on Sunday. Davitts, with the assistance of the difficult wind, got off to the worst possible start when midfielder Ronan McNamara pulled down Paul Duffy in the square. Crossmolina’s impressive centre half forward Conor Loftus made no mistake with the resultant spot kick. Davitts dusted themselves down after this and reeled off points from Michael Conroy (4), Fearghal McGrath and Josh Ronayne in a six minute blitz. Loftus and Ronayne exchanged points to leave Davitts ahead by 0-7 to 1-1 after fifteen minutes. Crossmolina hit their own purple patch in the second quarter and points from Loftus (3), Peadar Gardiner and David Howley with Paul Carey and Keith Prendergast replying for the homeside left the teams tied at 0-9 to 1-6 at halftime.

Michael Moyles would have been much the happier manager during the interval but Pete Warren’s half time pep talk seemed to have the desired effect on Davitts. After Loftus pointed another free in the third minute, to put the Deelsiders in front again, Davitts began to assume control. Conroy and Ronayne pointed before Josh Ronayne scored the crucial goal for Davitts after great work by Fearghal McGrath. Tom Cafferkey for Cross and another Ronayne point in the 45th minute left Davitts ahead by four but with Michael Conroy going off with a shoulder injury, the homeside had to play the final quarter without their talisman. Two further points from Loftus completed the scoring for Crossmolina and Ronayne had the final say with a late point for Davitts.

Davitts will be delighted to have full points from their opening two games and had solid performers in Johnno Clarke, the inspirational Colm Boyle, Paul Carey, Josh Ronayne, Michael Conroy, Keith Prendergast, Andrew Peters and impressive sub Thomas Waldron.

Best for Crossmolina were Tom Cafferkey, Declan Keating, Joe Keane, Peadar Gardiner, Conor Loftus and Cathal Carolan.

Davitts: David Mitchell, Colm Roche, Michael Ronayne, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, Cathal Higgins, Colm Boyle, Ronan McNamara, Paul Carey (0-1), Josh Ronayne (1-5), Keith Prendergast (0-1), Liam Kearns, Andrew Peters, Fearghal McGrath (0-1), Michael Conroy (0-5). Subs used: Thomas Waldron, Michael Waldron.

U-16 v Kilmeena – Match Report

Davitts U-16 team got back to winning ways with a tremendous 3-9 to 1-7 win over Kilmeena in Ballindine on Sunday. In a very keenly contested match, Davitts finished strongly for a deserved win.

Davitts led by 0-7 to 0-4 at halftime with points from Evan Ronayne (5) and Shane Treacy (2). Kilmeena came back strongly and a scrambled goal left just a point between the sides with ten minutes remaining but two fine goals from Andrei Trench and Patrick Keadin clinched the victory for the homeside.

Caelainn Mullee, yet again, was outstanding in goals with man of the match Ryan McLoughlin, Denis Fahy, John Kilkenny, Christopher Ryan and Cathal Moran defending tigerishly throughout. Patrick Keadin (1-1) and Jamie Mullee worked tirelessly at midfield. Up front, Francis Griffin, Evan Ronayne (0-6), Andrei Trench (2-0), Daniel Huane and Shane Treacy (0-2) all impressed.

Minors v Kiltimagh – Match Report

Davitts minor team retained the top spot in Div 2 of the League after a hard fought 3-6 to 1-8 victory over Kiltimagh in Kiltimagh on Friday evening. Davitts, minus the services of injured county minor Liam Noone, showed real battling qualities to see off their opponents in a game that really could have gone either way.

Davitts led by a point at the break, 1-3 to 1-2, the goal coming from midfielder Thomas Waldron, burying the rebound after his penalty kick was saved by the Kiltimagh keeper. Kiltimagh though, were the more impressive team in that first half and would have been leading but for some very poor shooting.

Like the first half, the exchanges were very competitive in the second period and it looked like the homeside were edging towards victory but the Davitts lads displayed admirable spirit and two late goals from Jack Rodgers and Gerald Griffin swung the game in their favour.

A great team display by Davitts but special mention must go to Dylan Keadin, Donal Ronayne, Jack Rodgers, Thomas Waldron, William Freeley and man of the match Matthew Trench who ran himself to a standstill in his first game back after injury.

Davitts team: Michael Mangan, Dylan Keadin, Donal Ronayne, Dylan Higgins, Jack Rodgers (1-0), Padraig Mangan, John Huane, Thomas Waldron (1-3), William Freeley, Patrick Keadin, Cathal Hennelly, Evan Ronayne (0-2), Gerald Griffin (1-0), Michael Clarke (0-1), Matthew Trench. Subs used: Richie O Connor, Liam Connolly.

Junior Team v Lacken – Match Report

Davitts junior team continued their good start to the season with an impressive 1-15 to 0-10 victory over Lacken in Ballindine on Saturday evening. Davitts led by 0-9 to 0-3 at half time after playing with the stiff wind. The first half scorers were Darren Connolly (6), Tommy Mitchell, Andrew Peters and Seamus Roche.

Davitts were more impressive in the second half and played some excellent football as Lacken threw all they had at the home side. The whole defence held firm with the full back line of Brian Clarke, Michael Waldron and Donal Ronayne in top form. Sean Waldron and Tommy Mitchell dominated midfield while Darren Connolly was most impressive at corner forward.

Further points from Tommy Mitchell, Sean Waldron, Darren Connolly (2), Donal Ronayne and Thomas Waldron and a superb goal from Darren Connolly sealed a good victory.

This was a great team performance and augers well for the future of the club as this is a very young squad of players. It would be wrong not to mention the Lacken’s John Clarke who gave an exhibition of freetaking scoring nine points from nine freekicks.

Davitts team: Adrian McNamara, Brian Clarke, Michael Waldron, Donal Ronayne (0-1), Mark Ronayne, James Cummins, Laurence Daly, Sean Waldron (0-1), Tommy Mitchell (0-2), Andrew Peters (0-1), Seamus Roche (0-1), Carlos O Gara, Darren Connolly (1-8), Clive Hennigan, Richie Kilkenny. Subs used: Thomas Waldron (0-1), Cathal Higgins, William Freeley, Padraig Mangan, Gerard McWalter.
