Player profile - The Hopper

Pat “Hopper” Hopkins

Age 30

Height 6’1”

Weight 10st

Hopper is a fitness fanatic who excels at a number of sports including soccer, tag rugby, cricket, badminton (not the one with horses) and cycling (as seen here sporting all all the essential bits of kit to rival the pros). He plays in the forwardline for the junior team when he’s not on holidays so unfortunately he misses a lot of games over the course of a season. Hopper has suffered a number of career threatening injuries and has grown very fond of Fitzy’s ice bath (not Smirnoff Ice). Pat is a great clubman and the man to contact if you are on the lookout for advice on a foreign holiday.

Dinner Dance – Friday 4th January TICKET PURCHASE REQUIRED

Reminder that the Dinner Dance is being held on Friday, 4th January in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris. It is imperative that anyone who wishes to attend has purchased a ticket (priced at €25) before January 1st. The hotel needs to know how many people there are to cater for by this date. There is no point showing up on the night if tickets haven’t been bought before the 1st of January, as refusal often offends. A great night is guaranteed this year and a large crowd is expected to attend, so in order to avoid any possible disappointment contact Ronan Kirrane @ 0879520169, Billy Kearns @ 0872020016 or Lucy Daly @ 0872212786 to order your tickets now. Thanks!

Player profile - Tommy Nolan

Tommy Nolan

Age 25

Height 5’10”

Weight 12st 4lbs

Tommy has made the full back position on the senior team his own this year following a string of solid performances. A very classy footballer who reads the game well, many of his displays this season left manager Pete Warren tickled pink. He has modelled his playing style on his all time hero Pat Coyne. Still improving as a player, Tommy has a big career ahead of him with Davitts and maybe at a higher level. Rumoured to be related to The Nolan Sisters, his version of that group’s 1980’s hit “I’m in the mood for dancing” has wooed audiences regularly at parties (allegedly).

Player profile - Josh Ronayne

Josh Ronayne

Age 20

Height 5’ 11”

Weight 12st 9lbs

Josh became an important attacker on the senior team this year before an ankle injury forced him to take a break. Before that he starred for the U-21 team with a string of terrific displays to claim the County C title and is sure to feature prominently on the County U-21 team next year. He was also a member of this year’s Mayo Junior panel. A strong running player who is deadly accurate with both feet makes him an extremely difficult opponent for any defender.

Josh is a former All-Ireland Scor na nOg recitation winner and says he wouldn’t rule out a career in acting when he quits playing football. His housemate and Davitts U-21 teammate Tommy Clarke (a keen movie buff) reckons that Josh could easily emulate Hollywood legends such as Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller. It is rumoured that he turned down a role in Fair City recently.

Davitts v Charlestown – Match Report

Davitts: 1-8

Charlestown: 0-11

Davitts and Charlestown ended up honours even in the final game of the Senior League Division 1A, played in the Connaught Centre Of Excellence on Sunday. This scoreline ensured safety for both clubs, but Charlestown would have been mightily relieved to hear the final whistle. After dominating the first half and leading by 0-8 to 0-3, Charlestown looked set for victory, but Davitts produced an excellent second half display and looked the more likely winners but a combination of poor shooting and a superb defensive performance by the Charlestown side led to a share of the spoils.

Last round of Senior League tomorrow (9th Dec)

The Senior team play their last (hopefully) league game of the season on Sunday in the Connaught Centre of Excellence in Bekan. Davitts will play Charlestown at 1.30pm in what will be a clash of last years Mayo and Connaught Intermediate Champions against this year’s holders of the same title. Davitts need at least a draw to guarantee their participation in Division 1A of next year’s Senior league while Charlestown require a win, depending on other results.

Davitts receive €80,000 sports development grant from Government

The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring announced details last Sunday of how €26m of funding for local sports projects is to be distributed. Davitts GAA Club is one of the beneficiaries in this round of grants, to the tune of €80,000!

Davitts applied for the sports grant earlier this year to help fund the construction of a new clubhouse. The application process took some serious preparation and hard work by a group of Club officers and committee members (Ronan Kirrane, Frank Hyland, Billy Kearns, Anne Ronayne and Tom Garvey). The Club would like to express their gratitude to this group for their efforts which have resulted in a massive boost for the Club in their efforts to significantly upgrade the facilities at the main pitch in Ballindine. The fact that Davitts GAA Club has been allocated such a hefty sum is testament to the work of the group.

Davitts would also like to thank John O’Mahony TD and County Councillor Patsy O’Brien for their assistance and support during the application process, and of course to Minister Ring for signing-off on the grant. Special thanks also to Joe Butler for his sage advice when assembling the application.

Player profile – Frankie Barrett

Player profile - Frankie Barrett

Age: 26

Height: 5’ 10”

Weight: 13st

Frankie (aka Lula) was a goalkeeper for many years before moving outfield and establishing himself as one of the best full backs in the county. A tough, no nonsense defender, he played a leading role for Davitts in their successful bid to win the Mayo and Connaught Intermediate Championships last year before emigrating to Australia. He showed what a superb clubman he is by returning for the All-Ireland final in February, and came on as a second half sub in that game.

Before leaving for Oz, Frankie was a very popular DJ in the South Mayo area. He is also a lover of fancy cars and his green post van was the envy of his teammates before he left. It appears that Frankie has not lost the ability to pick up an auto bargain judging by the lovely picture of vehicle Reg. No 1BAM222 (source: Kevin Pups Daly).
