U-16’s outclass Hollymount-Carramore to clinch League Title

Davitts U-16’s produced a stunning display to defeat Hollymount-Carramore by 4-12 to 2-7 in the County Division 4 League final in McHale Park on Friday evening. A splendid goal cleverly scored by Shane Treacy in the 3rd minute put Davitts on their way and some tremendous point taking by man of the match Padraig Mangan, Davitts inspirational captain, and two further goals by Evan Ronayne and Jack Rodgers had Davitts ahead by 3-6 to 1-5 at half time.

Davits extended their lead with second half points from Gerald Griffin, Cathal Hennelly, Mikey Devane, Evan Ronayne and Padraig Mangan and Ronayne’s second goal, a delightful chip, with fifteen minutes remaining effectively finished the game as a contest. Hollymount-Carramore battled bravely to the end as Davitts took their foot off the pedal but there was only going to be one winner.

Thomas Monaghan was a capable goalkeeper while Dylan Keadin and Dylan Higgins were excellent as usual in front of him. Michael Mangan marshalled the defence very well at centre back flanked by the tight marking Denis Og Fahy and Seanie Burke who attacked at every opportunity. Padraig Mangan (0-6) and Jack Rodgers (1-1) were superb at midfield throughout.

In attack Cathal Hennelly (0-1), Mikey Devane (0-1), Gerald Griffin (0-1) and Shane Treacy (1-0) worked tremendously hard for the team while Evan Ronayne was top scorer with 2-2 after playing another starring role. Jamie Mullee, Richie O Connor and Kieran Waldron were introduced in the second half and they played their part in this win while the other panellists include Caolan Mullee, Christopher Ryan, Francis Griffin, Lorcan Diskin and Conor Macken.

Well done to the team management of JP Kirrane, Liam Griffin and Joe Mangan who have put so much work into this team.

Best wishes to Davitts ladies county U-14 stars, and Davitts Senior Team this weekend

Davitts GAA Club would like to wish the “Davettes”, Ailis Ronayne, Aisling O Connor and Rebecca Waldron the best of luck on Saturday (June 30th) when they represent Mayo U-14’s in the All Ireland ‘A’ LFC Final against Cork in Birr at 4pm. All three are outstanding footballers and it’s a great reflection on the progress that Davitts Ladies Club has made recently to have such a strong representation in the squad. Hopefully everything goes well for the girls.

On Sunday, all roads will lead to Clogher, as the Senior team go to battle with County Senior Champions Ballintubber in the Senior Championship. Ballintubber are an outstanding team, full of star players, but Davitts will not fear them. When the two sides met a few weeks ago in a league game at the same venue, Ballintubber won by four points (2-12 to 1-11), in a very entertaining game. Davitts will have to play to their full potential to pull off what would be regarded as a huge shock. Best of luck lads.

Seniors v Crossmolina – Secondary League – Match Report

Davitts Senior team travelled to Crossmolina and were defeated 1-11 to 1-4 by the homeside on Saturday evening in the Michael Walsh Senior League. This game was spoiled by the atrocious conditions and things were not helped by an over fussy referee. Crossmolina led by 0-5 to 0-4 at halftime with Davitts scores coming from Josh Ronayne, Ronan McNamara, Keith Prendergast and Aidan McTigue. Davitts took the lead with twenty minutes remaining when Liam Kearns got on the end of a good move to blast to the net. Crossmolina swiftly replied and tagged on five unanswered points to go four up.

Davitts thought they had narrowed the gap to one when Josh Ronayne goaled with five minutes remaining, after a great passing movement, but a very vigilant umpire disallowed it, signalling that the ball had gone out of play over the endline earlier on in the move. To compound Davitts woes, Cross came up the field and scored a most fortuitous goal as an attempt to punch a ball over the bar ended up in the Davitts net.

Davitts best players were David Mitchell, Pat Coyne, Michael Ronayne, the outstanding Ronan McNamara and Aidan McTigue.

Davitts team: David Mitchell, Colm Roche, Pat Coyne, Kevin Gallagher, Michael Waldron, James Cummins, Michael Ronayne, Ronan McNamara (0-1), Paul Carey, Keith Prendergast (0-1), Josh Ronayne (0-1), Liam Kearns (1-0), Aidan McTigue (0-1), Fearghal McGrath, Carlos O Gara. Sub used: Andrew Peters.

The homeside never took their foot off the pedal and the games only goal came 5 minutes into the second half. Jack Rodgers started off a move in his own backline that involved Mikey Devane, Seanie Burke and Cathal Hennelly, before the outstanding Evan Ronayne goaled superbly to effectively finish the game as a contest.

Juniors v St. Patricks – Match Report

Davitts Junior team continued on their recent winning run with a fine 1-8 to 0-8 win over a gallant St. Patricks side (Mayo Over 40’s) in the County Junior B Championship in Ballindine on Friday evening. Davitts were made work very hard for this victory but excellent displays from Brian Clarke, Luke Ronayne, Cathal Higgins, Tommy Mitchell, captain Seamus Roche, Darren Connolly and Richie Kilkenny ensured a winning start in this competition for the homeside.

Davitts led by 1-4 to 0-4 at halftime, the goal coming from the hard working Seamus Roche, who reacted quickest to a defensive mix-up. The highlight of that first half however was a glorious point scored by James Kilkenny, a top class score with the outside of his right boot, that was greeted by the biggest roar of the evening from the ecstatic home crowd.

St. Patricks tried hard to bridge that gap in the second half but good points scored by John Heneghan, Richie Kilkenny (2) and Andrew Peters kept them at bay.

This was an entertaining game and one had to marvel at the enthusiasm displayed by the St. Patrick’s players. One wonders why the GAA abandoned the Masters competition.

Davitts: David Mitchell, Brian Clarke, Luke Ronayne, John Costello, Cathal Higgins, Martin Cosgrove, JP Kirrane, Tommy Mitchell, John Heneghan (0-1), Andrew Peters (0-1), Seamus Roche (1-0), Jason Connolly, Darren Connolly (0-2), James Kilkenny (0-1), Richie Kilkenny (0-3).
