Davitts man on new National Football Review Committee

When the President of the GAA, Liam O Neill, announced the Football Review Committee last week, to be chaired by Eugene McGee, it included Irishtown native and former Davitts player, Kevin Griffin, who will act as Secretary of the Committee.

Kevin played at all grades for the club, usually as a midfielder, and represented Mayo at underage level, until immigration robbed us of his services in the late 1980’s. Kevin now works in UCD but keeps a close eye on the progress of his home club of which he is still a member (who’d have guessed it judging by this photo?!). Davitts GAA Club wish Kevin the best of luck in his new role.

The full Football Review Committee is as follows:

Eugene McGee, Longford

Killian Burns, Kerry

Declan Darcy, Dublin/Leitrim

Paul Earley, Roscommon/Kildare

Kevin Griffin, Mayo

Tim Healy, Cork/Wicklow

Ciaran McBride, Tyrone

Tony Scullion, Derry

John Tobin, Galway

Age 30

Weight 13st 5lb

PC is a hugely influential player for the club who has represented the county at all grades. Strong, tough, determined and forceful player who can play in a number of positions. Formed a great relationship with his partner Ronan Mac last year (at midfield that is). Has a very dangerous left boot and an extremely harmless right one. Has become a better player since his on field discipline improved but is still a formidable opponent in the physical side of the game. Paul talked himself onto the Club’s Committee at the last AGM and does a lot of work with the underage teams.

Juniors v Breaffy – Match Report

An understrength Davitts B team lost their unbeaten league run in Breaffy on Sunday when beaten, 2-8 to 0-9, by Breaffy B. Davitts started off the better and but for some wayward shooting would have been much further ahead at half time. Davitts did lead by 0-5 to 0-1 at the break but the dismissal of JP Kirrane after twelve minutes didn’t help their cause.

In the second half Breaffy used their numerical advantage to good effect and scored two killer goals. Davitts fought hard right up to the finish and James Cummins, Martin Cosgrove, Mark Ronayne, Pat Coyne, Tommy Mitchell, Josh Ronayne, Liam Kearns and Carlos O Gara took the game to Breaffy while goalkeeper David Mitchell also impressed, but the home team ran out deserving winners.

Davitts team: David Mitchell, Luke Ronayne, Michael Ronayne, JP Kirrane, Martin Cosgrove, James Cummins, Mark Ronayne, Pat Coyne (0-1), Tommy Mitchell, Liam Kearns (0-3), Josh Ronayne (0-4), Carlos O Gara (0-1), Jason Connolly, Dave McDonagh, Richie Kilkenny. Seniors v Crossmolina – Match Report

Crossmolina: 2-12

Davitts: 1-10

Davitts Senior team travelled to Crossmolina on Saturday evening and, whilst again

proving they can put it up to the big boys, still came home without the league points. The game was tit for tat early on until Crossmolina goaled in the 15th minute to put them into a 1-5 to 0-3 lead. Davitts responded well and an excellent Josh Ronayne goal, cleverly created by Michael Conroy, and points by the most impressive Paul Carey (2) and Ronan McNamara left Crossmolina ahead by 1-7 to 1-6 at the break.

The home side demonstrated why they have been one of the top teams in the county, and indeed country, for the past number of years with their clever second half play although spurned goal chances by Ronayne, Aidan McTigue and McNamara could have changed the outcome of this game.

Davitts were best served by Mark Diskin, Alan Roche, James Cummins, Ronan McNamara, Keith Prendergast (1st half), the excellent Paul Carey, Josh Ronayne, Aidan McTigue and Michael Conroy.

Davitts: Mark Diskin, Colm Roche, Michael Waldron, Kevin Gallagher, Michael Ronayne, Alan Roche, James Cummins, Ronan McNamara (0-2), Keith Prendergast, Paul Carey (0-2), Josh Ronayne (1-1), Liam Kearns, Aidan McTigue (0-3), David McDonagh, Michael Conroy (0-2). U-14’s v Islandeady – Match Report

Davitts and Islandeady U-14 teams met in the league in Ballindine on Thursday evening and they served up an absolute thriller with the visitors just about shading it to win by 2-13 to 2-10. Davitts had led by 1-6 to 0-6 at the break with outstanding midfielder Evan Ronane scoring 1-5 and Daniel Huane getting the other point.

Islandeady came out with all guns blazing in the second half as the game balanced on a knife edge. They ate into the Davitts lead and two well worked goals had the visitors ahead by four points with ten minutes remaining but a goal from the hard working Jamie Mullee and another Huane point tied the game. Islandeady were not going to be denied however as they scored the final three points of this pulsating game.

Best for Davitts were Caelainn Mullee, a very promising goalie, Francis Griffin, Ryan McLoughlin, Kieran Fahy, Kieran Waldron, Evan Ronane, Daniel Huane, Jamie Mullee and Cian Treacy.

Davitts team: Caelainn Mullee, Francis Griffin, Cathal Moran, John Kilkenny, Ryan McLoughlin, Kieran Fahy, Kieran Waldron, Evan Ronane (1-7), Jack Ronayne, Daniel Huane (0-2), Jamie Mullee (1-1), Lorcan Diskin, Cian Naughton, Andrei Trench, Cian Treacy. Subs: Aidan Macken and Kealan Cosgrove.

U-14’s v The Neale – Match Report

Davitts U-14 team made it three wins from five outings in the league with a fine 4-15 to 4-8 victory over The Neale in Cong on Monday evening. Davitts were well on top in the first half and led by 2-7 to 0-5 at half time with Jamie Mullee and Andrei Trench getting the goals. The defence were on top in this period with Ryan McLoughlin, Kieran Fahy and John Kilkenny initiating a number of attacks from their own backline.

Davitts continued to dominate the second half but had to withstand a late scoring blitz from the plucky Neale team. Jack Ronayne and Cian Naughton supplied the second half goals as the whole team played their parts in this good win.

Player profile – Michael Ronayne

Michael Ronayne

Age: 24

Michael (also known as Teddy) is a strong, disciplined and dependable defender who reads a game superbly. He is a great example of a player that does the simple things well and is pushing hard for a regular starting place on the senior team. The Kilmacnella man (younger brother of Luke) is a key member of the junior team currently unbeaten in the league, “mopping up” any ball that comes his way. Developed a slight scouse accent after the team’s trip to Liverpool before Christmas.
