Juniors v Claremorris – Match Report

Davitts junior team began their Mayo Senior Div 1E league campaign with a hard earned, 1-12 to 0-8 victory away to Claremorris on Friday evening. The first half was very closely contested and Davitts were probably the happier team at halftime, as the sides were level, 0-5 each, with Claremorris looking the sharper side in that opening period.

Davitts looked a different team in the second half with midfielders Tommy Mitchell and John Heneghan stepping up their efforts and, driven on by Michael Ronayne, James Cummins, team captain Seamus Roche, Carlos O Gara, Josh Ronayne and David McDonagh, began to turn the screw on their hosts. Liam Kearns punished every indiscretion by the homeside with a top class display of freetaking, but the crucial score came with ten minutes remaining when the wily McDonagh was hauled down in the square and Kearns converted the resulting penalty with aplomb.

Tommy Nolan, back from a long injury lay-off, Martin Cosgrove, Michael Waldron, David Mitchell, Mark Ronayne and Richie Kilkenny can all be pleased with their performances in this local derby.
