U-15 and Junior – Match Reports

Davitts U-15 team had two good league victories in the last week. Last Sunday they recorded a 2-9 to 1-5 win, away to Crossmolina. Davitts always held the upper hand in this physical encounter and had great performances from Tommy Charles, Padraig Mangan, Thomas Waldron, William Freeley , Matthew Trench and Donie Ronayne.

They followed that up with a 3-16 to 1-2 defeat of Kilmeena, in Kilmeena, not winning as convincingly as the scoreline suggests. Tommy Waldron was superb in this game and got great assistance from Shane Cummins (who scored 2-3), Padraig Mangan, Johnny Huane, Donie Ronayne and William Freeley.

Meanwhile the junior team put up a brave fight before being defeated 4-10 to 3-6 by Carramore in the South Mayo junior B championship. Davitts had star players in midfielders John Heneghan and Tommy Mitchell, Michael Waldron, Mark Ronayne and the energetic JP Kirrane in defence and up front Pat Hopkins (scorer of a fantastic goal), the prolific Con Penny and John Paul Clarke, while substitutes Seamus Roche and Tommy Heneghan also did well when introduced.

U-11’s win South Mayo ‘C’ Final

Davitts and The Neale contested an entertaining South Mayo ‘C’ Final on Saturday afternoon in Claremorris, Davitts emerging 4-11 to 3-7 winners. Skilful midfielder Jack Ronayne started the scoreboard ticking over with a well taken point after 3 minutes, and added a second point 3 minutes later with free.

Liam Macken added a third after 10 minutes with a delightful point after good work from the outstanding Ciaran Fahy. The Neale then hit back with their only score of the half to level matters, a goal after the Davitts defence failed to deal with a loose ball in the square, the only time in the first half that the Davitts defence were found wanting. Davitts replied strongly with points from Cian Treacy and Ronayne (2) adding to a goal by team captain Rebecca Waldron. Ronayne then netted shortly before half time, leaving the scoreline at the break 2-6 to 1-0.

Niall Kearns got the scoring underway in the second half with Davitts first attack, one minute into the action, however, The Neale then burst into life and hit 1-1 in quick succession, the Davitts defence suddenly looking a lot more vulnerable. With Davitts lead cut to six points, they reacted in fine fashion with Waldron and Liam Macken adding a point apiece. The Neale hit back with three points on the trot, before corner forward Niall Kearns scored a well deserved goal with 10 minutes left to play. The excellent Ronayne then added another point. To their credit, The Neale did not give up, and responded with a goal with 7 minutes remaining on the clock. A point at either end was traded, Davitts score coming from a Jack Ronayne free, before a long ball into the square from Ronayne was deftly flicked on by Kearns and ended up in the net with one minute remaining. The Neale had time to score two more points, with some nervy moments in the Davitts defence during the dying minutes of the game, however, the referee then blew the final whistle, seeing Davitts secure a seven point victory.

In what was a fantastic team performance, Davitts had outstanding players in Thomas Corless, Dimitri Trench, Aidan Macken and Ciaran Fahy in defence. Jack Ronayne turned in a man of the match performance at midfield, while Liam Macken, Niall Kearns and Rebecca Waldron excelled in attack.

County Division 4 League Semi-Final

Davitts and Kiltane served up a thriller in the County Div 4 league semi-final, in Ballindine on Saturday, the sides finishing level, Davitts 2-12, Kiltane 1-15, after extra time. Davitts started off well with early goals from Jason Connolly, a delightful lob over the advancing keeper, and Josh Ronayne, but Kiltane fought back well against the wind, and Davitts only led by two points at the interval, 2-3 to 1-4.

Davitts looked up against it at this stage but in the second half they showed their battling qualities, coming from behind on three occasions, the last point in normal time fittingly scored by centre back, birthday boy James Prendergast, who played superbly throughout. The game ebbed and flowed in extra time, with Davitts equalising with the last kick of a pulsating match, a brilliant 45 metre free kick by Josh Ronayne.

Dave Mitchell was an assured figure in the Davitts goals, while the corner backs, Donie Ronayne and Gerard McWalter were magnificent. Tommy Heneghan made a number of vital interceptions, while Tommy Clarke and Cathal Higgins had their moments alongside the outstanding James Prendergast (0-1). Michael Waldron (0-1) had a great game at midfield, ably assisted by the hardworking Mark Ronayne. Young Liam Noone (0-3) excelled in attack along with Josh Ronayne (1-6), while Jason Connolly (1-0), Tommy Waldron, Clive Hennigan (0-1) and sub John Macken worked extremely hard.

Senior, Junior & U-15 – Match Reports

Davitts travelled to Garrymore and shared the Division 1B senior league points in a cracking game on Sunday. Garrymore were well on top for most of the first half and led by 1-8 to 0-2 after twenty minutes. Davitts however clawed their way back into the game notching four unanswered points before the break. Davitts completely took over in the second half with Ronan McNamara, David McDonagh and Pat Coyne dominating the aerial exchanges, Colm Boyle and Frankie Barrett supreme in defence and Aidan McTigue in top form up front, and will consider themselves very unlucky not to have won this game. The final scoreline was 0-14 to 1-11.

On Saturday evening the junior team defeated Aughamore, 2-7 to 1-9, in an exciting Division 1F senior league clash, played in Ballindine. Minor star Josh Ronayne had an excellent match while the lethal sharpshooter Con Penny scored both goals, two cracking finishes past the hopeless, sorry hapless, Patrick Finnegan, the Aughamore custodian.

The under 15’s had a very impressive 0-18 to 1-7 victory over Swinford in Div 2A of the county league. This was a good solid team display with Thomas Charles, Donie Ronayne, Tommy Waldron, Liam Noone and Matthew Trench in terrific form.

U-14’s overwhelm St. Gerards to win South B Title

Davitts captured the South Mayo U-14 B title, with an excellent 4-11 to 2-4 victory over St.Gerards in the final played in Garrymore on Wednesday evening. Shane Treacy opened the scoring in the 13th minute but St. Gerards replied with an unanswered 1-2 in the next five minutes. Davitts then began to play some great football and scores from Michael Mangan (1-2), Jack Rodgers (1-0), Gerard Griffin (0-1), Richie Connor (0-1) and Cathal Hennelly (0-1) had Davitts ahead, 2-6 to 1-2 at halftime.

Davitts added two more goals in the second half, the first a fine individual effort from Treacy and the second, the score of the game with Mikey Devane finishing superbly after a great move started by Denis Fahy and involving Griffin, Hennelly and Connor. Points by Hennelly (3), Treacy and Padraig Mangan completed the Davitts scoring, rounding off a tremendous team display.

Team captain Thomas Monaghan proved a competent goalkeeper while in defence Dylan Higgins, Denis Fahy, Dylan Keadian, Seanie Bourke and Michael Mangan were in terrific form. Padraig Mangan and Jack Rodgers controlled the midfield sector, while in attack, Mikey Devane, Cathal Hennelly (who had a massive second half), Shane Treacy and Richie Connor all played starring roles but the dynamic Gerard Griffin’s all action display, would have made him man of the match in most people’s eyes. Substitutes, Kelan Cosgrove, Francis Griffin, Lorcan Diskin and Aaron Naughton all played their part in a great victory for the club. Well done boys.

Davitts v St. Gerards – South Mayo B Final

St. Gerards defeated Davitts heavily in the South Mayo Minor B final in Garrymore on Friday evening, to crown off a miserable week for the club. St. Gerards dominated from start to finish and, on this display, will be hot favourites to win the county title. Nobody tried harder for Davitts than the lionhearted Donie Ronayne (who shipped an awful lot of punishment throughout the game but never shirked a challenge), his brother Mark, Gerard McWalter, Tommy Waldron, James Prendergast and Dara Halligan but St. Gerards were just too powerful for the young Davitts team, over half the team that ended the game are under 16. (Final score 3-15 to 0-2).

Subs: Dara Halligan, Liam Noone, Tommy Charles, John Macken, Cathal Higgins and Brian Clarke.

U-21’s v Ballinrobe – County B Semi Final

Davitts U-21 team bowed out of the County B championship in Hollymount on Wednesday evening, being beaten 1-10 to 1-8 by Ballinrobe in an exciting semi-final. Davitts had led 1-4 to 0-5 at half time, Liam Kearns the goalscorer, but a combination of resolute Ballinrobe defending and some poor Davitts shooting swung the tie in Ballinrobe’s favour in the second half. On an evening when little went right for Davitts, their best players were Paddy Kirrane, Kevin Gallagher, Jonathon Clarke, the superb Keith Glynn and Fergal McGrath.

Davitts team: Paddy Kirrane, Kevin Gallagher, Mark Ronayne, Michael Waldron, Jonathon Clarke, Laurence Daly, John Heneghan, Shane Mitchell, Liam Kearns (1-1), Keith Prendergast (0-3), Keith Glynn, Josh Ronayne (0-1), Fergal McGrath (0-3).
