Minors v Naomh Pádraig – Summer League

A very understrength and youthful Davitts minor team were defeated 2-10 to 0-10 by Naoimh Pádraig in the Summer League in Ballindine on Friday evening. Davitts fought very hard all through with corner backs Brian Clarke and Gerard McWalter in top form in front of goalie David Mitchell, the team captain for this game in the absence of Michael Waldron and Josh Ronayne. Cathal Higgins, Tommy Heneghan and Dara Halligan did well in the half back line. At midfield Mark Ronayne put in his usual all action display and got great support from Clive Hennigan who scored two good points. Up front, debutante Liam Noone showed why he is so highly rated, scoring five points, and combining well with the livewire Tommy Waldron (0-1), while John Macken, Darren Connolly (0-1) and Jason Connolly (0-1) all worked very hard.

U-14’s v Louisburgh – U-14 D Football Championship

Davitts U-14 team had a great victory away to Louisburgh, on Thursday evening, in the county championship, winning by 3-9 to 3-5. The first half produced some very poor fare and Davitts led 1-1 to 0-2 at the interval with midfielder Jack Rodgers scoring the goal.

After some stern words from the team mentors at half time, the Davitts boys raised their performances considerably and further goals from the impressive Rodgers and livewire forward Gerard Griffin put Davitts in a commanding position going into the last five minutes of the game. Louisburgh to their credit never gave up and two late goals put a very respectable look to the scoreline.

Jack Rodgers, who ended up with a personal tally of 2-2, and Padraig Mangan gave Davitts the edge at midfield, and there were other good displays from Michael Mangan, Dylan Higgins, Shane Treacy and Gerard Griffin.

Davitts v Shrule-Glencorrib – County U-21 B Championship

Davitts and Shrule-Glencorrib served up a thriller in the first round of the County U-21 B Championship in rainswept Ballindine on Tuesday evening, with the Davitts boys edging it on a 1-9 to 1-8 scoreline. Things didn’t look good for the homeside at halftime, the teams level 1-4 apiece after Davitts had played with the wind advantage in the first half, and with midfielder and team captain Keith Glynn unable to return to the action through injury, but the team put in a tremendous effort in the second half to shade it by the narrowest of margins.

Davitts had heroes throughout the field with goalie Paddy Kirrane in top form and in front of him Kevin Gallagher, Kieran Mooney, Laurence Daly and Mark Ronayne were inspirational in the second half. Michael Waldron and Shane Mitchell impressed at midfield while up front county minor Josh Ronayne was the games most influential player, getting good support from Keith Prendergast and Fergal McGrath.

Davitts: Paddy Kirrane, Kevin Gallagher, Kieran Mooney, Michael Waldron, Shane Mitchell, Keith Prendergast (0-4), Fergal McGrath (0-1), David Cosgrove, Richie Kilkenny, Josh Ronayne (1-4). Subs used: Mark Ronayne and Darren Connolly.

Davitts v Achill – Intermediate Championship

Davitts v Achill - Intermediate Championship

Davitts and Achill locked horns in the intermediate championship in Ballindine on Sunday, with the points being shared in a dour encounter, which was spoiled by the extremely difficult crossfield wind. Davitts got an early goal when Michael Conroy was on the end of a great move involving Pat Coyne, Dave McDonagh and Fergal McGrath, after 8 minutes, but Achill responded well and went in at half time ahead 1-5 to 1-4. This scoreline would have been worse but for some great defending by Paul Carey and James Cummins.

The game hung in the balance right up to the last seconds with Ronan McNamara scoring some excellent points for the home side in what was a very disappointing performance. The only Davitts players that can be pleased with their game were Paul Carey, James Cummins, Colm Boyle, Ronan McNamara, Pat Coyne, Aidan McTigue and Michael Conroy, while second half substitutes Martin Cosgrove and Keith Glynn also did well.

Davitts team: Paddy Kirrane, Tommy Nolan, Frankie Barrett, Colm Boyle, Johnno Clarke, Paul Carey (0-1), James Cummins, Dave McDonagh, Ronan McNamara (0-5), Pat Coyne, Fergal McGrath, Keith Prendergast, Josh Ronayne, Michael Conroy (1-1), Aidan McTigue (0-1). U-16’s v Crossmolina – County League Div 2

Davitts U-16 team were defeated by Crossmolina, 2-12 to 2-11, in a thrilling league game played in Ballindine on Saturday. Davitts trailed 1-6 to 0-7 at half time and by 2-11 to 1-9 with five minutes remaining, but points from Tommy Waldron and Michael Clarke and a second Liam Noone goal left the sides level, but a 40 metre free kick, the last kick of the game, gave Crossmolina the two league points. This was a very good game and Crossmolina just about deserved their victory.
