Parke v Davitts – Minor Championship – Match Report

Davitts minor team advanced to the next round of the county C championship, when making hard work of defeating an understrength Parke team in Parke on Friday evening. Davitts, playing into the breeze in the opening half, trailed the homeside by 1-3 to 0-5 at half time, with only county under 16 player Mark Ronayne playing with urgency, and things were looking very bleak for the Davitts lads. Davitts however, showing a much better attitude, completely dominated the second half, with midfielders Michael Waldron and Josh Ronayne lording it, and they steadily pulled away from their hosts, to win by 2-16 to 2-6.

A big improvement will be required if Davitts are to advance any further in this competition. Best for Davitts were David Mitchell, Mark Ronayne, Dara Halligan, Josh Ronayne, Michael Waldron, Clive Hennigan and subs Jason Connolly and James Prendergast.

Davitts team: David Mitchell, Tommy Ruddock, Tommy Heneghan, Mark Ronayne (0-1), Dara Halligan, Michael Waldron (0-2), Josh Ronayne (2-7), David Hyland (0-1), Clive Hennigan (0-1), Darren Connolly (0-2), Tommy Clarke (0-2). Subs used: Jason Connolly and James Prendergast.

Kiltane v Davitts – Match Report

Davitts were beaten by Kiltane by 2-14 to 0-11 in the Senior League Div 1B game, played in Bangor on Saturday evening. This defeat leaves Davitts hovering around the relegation zone. Davitts were the better team in the first half but two Kiltane goals late in the first half left them in front by 2-3 to 0-7 at half time, somewhat against the run of play.

Kiltane looked very strong in the second half however and ran out deserving winners. Best for Davitts were Frankie Barrett, Colm Boyle, Derek Mooney, Johnno Clarke, Pa Carey, Fergal McGrath and Keith Prendergast.

Davitts: Paddy Kirrane, Tommy Nolan, Frankie Barrett, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, Colm Boyle, Derek Mooney, Shane Mitchell, David McDonagh, Seamus Roche (0-2), Pa Carey (0-2), Colm Roche, Fergal McGrath (0-2), Aidan McTigue, Keith Prendergast (0-5). Heavy loss for under par Junior Team

Davitts B played Kilmovee Shamrocks in the league in Ballindine on Tuesday evening, and were well beaten 1-18 to 1-5. Davitts started brightly and led by 1-2 to 0-3 after ten minutes, with a great Colm Roche goal and points by John Heneghan and James Cummins (making a welcome return in the Davitts colours after his Australian adventures), accounting for the Davitts tally. Kilmovee tagged on six more points before the interval with only one reply from the trusty boot of Con Penny, a real favourite with the home crowd, to leave the halftime score 0-9 to 1-3 in favour of the visitors.

Kilmovee confirmed their superiority in the second half, and only for the great defending of Derek Mooney, Martin Cosgrove and Michael Ronayne (up to his withdrawl through injury) and his brother Luke, would have won more emphatically. Davitts only scores in the second half were points by Cosgrove and Josh Ronayne, a player with huge potential.

Davitts team: Brendan Devane, Martin Cosgrove (0-1), Luke Ronayne, JP Kirrane, Derek Mooney, Michael Ronayne, Laurence Daly, Tommy Mitchell, Johnno Clarke, Colm Roche (1-0), Mark Diskin, James Cummins (0-1), Richie Kilkenny, John Heneghan (0-1), Con Penny (0-1). Subs used: Kevin Gallagher, Josh Ronayne (0-1), Pat McGee and Seamus Roche.

Davitts v Ballinrobe – South Mayo U-14 A Championship

Davitts v Ballinrobe - South Mayo U-14 A Championship

Davitts hosted Ballinrobe in the South Mayo u-14 A semi final on Thursday evening, with the visitors winning by a single point, after a pulsating battle, that will remain in the memories of the large attendance for a long time. Ballinrobe, the recently crowned county B champions, set all the early running, and dominated the first half, deservedly leading by 4-7 to 1-3 at half time. Things looked bleak for the homeside at this stage, as only Tommy Charles, Matthew Trench and Cathal Hennelly were playing up to their usual standard.

Whatever words of wisdom spoken to the Davitts lads during the break, worked the oracle in spectacular fashion, as Davitts began to claw away at the thirteen point deficit, and managed to reduce it to just one at the final whistle, playing some magnificent football in the process. Davitts indeed would have won the game but for some excellent last gasp defending by an overworked Ballinrobe defence. The final scoreline was Ballinrobe 4-9, Davitts 3-11.

Captain Donal Ronayne led by example in the second half, and he and the very impressive Matthew Trench were superb at midfield. Tommy Charles excelled at centre back, with great backup from William Freeley and John Huane. Up front, Tommy Waldron, Liam Noone, Michael Clarke Cathal Hennelly and lively sub Gerard Griffin all worked extremely hard to try to pull off a famous victory.

Team: Michael Mangan, Liam Connolly, Tommy Charles, John Huane, William Freeley, Jonathon Fahy, Donal Ronayne, Shane Cummins, Michael Clarke, Liam Noone, Matthew Trench, Cathal Hennelly, Tommy Waldron. Sub used Gerard Griffin.

Davitts played much better in the second half and went on to win comfortably in the end. Davitts had great performances from goalkeeper Paddy Kirrane, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, Michael Ronayne, Colm Boyle, evergreen Dave McDonagh, Liam Kearns, Paul Carey and subs Fergal McGrath and Pat Coyne.

Prendergast Cup – Match Report

Davitts intermediate team retained the Prendergast Cup on Saturday evening, when they defeated Ballyhaunis, 0-10 to 0-9, in a very closely fought encounter in the beautifully appointed Ballyhaunis pitch. Points by captain Paul Carey (2), the lively Aidan McTigue (2) and Liam Kearns, had Davitts ahead, 0-5 to 0-4 at half time, in a pretty lethargic first half.

Things improved drastically in the second half, with the exchanges getting heated on several occasions, and Ballyhaunis will count themselves very unlucky not to have at least got a draw, but two late points by Carey and McTigue swung the balance in Davitts favour.

Davitts best performers were Frankie Barrett at full back, Tommy Nolan, Colm Boyle, Dave McDonagh, Seamus and Colm Roche, Paul Carey, Aidan McTigue and Fergal McGrath.

Davitts team: Mark Diskin, Tommy Nolan, Frankie Barrett, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, Tommy Mitchell. Colm Boyle (0-1), Dave McDonagh, Shane Mitchell, Seamus Roche, Paul Carey (0-3), Colm Roche, Liam Kearns (0-1), Aidan McTigue (0-4), Keith Prendergast. Subs used: Fergal McGrath (0-1), Michael Ronayne, Maurice Prendergast and Martin Cosgrove.
