Achill B v Davitts B – Junior League

The B team were defeated in Achill by a physically stronger home side in the league on Saturday evening. The final score was Achill 1-11, Davitts 1-7. Davitts were playing into the wind in the first half and actually led by a point at the interval. Achill, sensing that they were in danger, made a few changes for the second half, introducing two very impressive subs, and the game changed around in their favour. Davitts best performances came from ace marksman Con Penny, who scored 1-5, Derek Mooney, Kieran Kirrane, John Heneghan, Tommy Mitchell and Carlos O Gara.

U-14 Division 3 League Final – Match Report

U-14 Division 3 League Final match report

On Thursday evening the U-14’s captured the County Div 3 League title in style, defeating St. Gerards by 3-14 to 1-6. When these sides met in Ballindine a few weeks ago, St. Gerards won with plenty in hand, but Davitts reversed that result in emphatic fashion in the final. Man of the match Tommy Waldron had Davitts 1-1 up after five minutes, and St. Gerards dominated the rest of the first half and led 0-6 to 1-1, but late points by the irrepressible Waldron and Liam Noone left the sides deadlocked, 1-3 to 0-6 at the break.

The second half belonged to Davitts, with Donal Ronayne and Shane Cummins working extremely hard at midfield, and the attack scoring at will, with the creative Matthew Trench pulling the strings, and supplying the ammunition for Noone (1-6) and Waldron (2-7) to keep the scoreboard ticking over. St. Gerards tried hard, but when they got forward they ran into a defence that was very uncompromising, with Thomas Charles and William Freeley in outstanding form. As well as those mentioned, Davitts had other stars in goalie Michael Clarke, Liam Connolly, Jonathon Fahy, David O Toole, Jack Rodgers, Cathal Hennelly and Gerard Griffin. Mattie Joe Connolly presented the trophy to Davitts captain Donal Ronayne after the game. P.S. The Garrymore Club had the ground in tremendous condition for this game, it is a great credit to the club.

Davitts U-21’s v St. Gerards – Brennan Cup

Davitts defeated St. Gerards by 3-9 to 2-10 in a very exciting match in sunny Ballindine on Wednesday evening. Davitts led by 1-5 to 0-3 at the interval, Richie Kilkenny the goalscorer, after a sweeping move started by David Ryan. The dismissal of Davitts centre half back Tommy Mitchell, Johnno Clarke and St.Gerards Kevin Connolly, for separate second yellow card offences early in the second half, changed the complexion of the game.

St. Gerards began to dominate, and after trailing by six points, they scored 1-5 without reply, to go two points up with ten minutes remaining. Davitts then showed great determination and a John Heneghan goal, flicking home Josh Ronayne’s long range free, swung the game in their favour. Ronayne and Liam Kearns pointed impressively for the homeside and in one final attack St. Gerards almost snatched an equaliser, but a driving shot went just over for a point as the Davitts supporters held their breaths.

Outstanding for Davitts were goalie Paddy Kirrane, David Ryan, John Heneghan, Josh Ronayne, Liam Kearns, Richie Kilkenny and Keith Prendergast, who played exceptionally well when moved to midfield late on in the game. Davitts: Paddy Kirrane, Kevin Gallagher, David Ryan, Johnno Clarke, Tommy Mitchell, Laurence Daly, Shane Mitchell, John Heneghan (1-0), Josh Ronayne (0-3), Keith Prendergast (0-3), Michael Waldron, Liam Kearns (0-3) and Richie Kilkenny (2-0). Sub used: John Paul Clarke.

U-16 v Ballaghadreen & Intermediate v Mayo Gaels

U-16 v Ballaghadreen & Intermediate v Mayo Gaels

The U-16 team played at home to Ballaghadereen on Tuesday evening and were defeated by 5-12 to 4-11 in an entertaining league game. In a game in which Davitts appeared to come out the wrong side of a number of dodgy refereeing decisions, Gerard McWalter, Donnacha Geraghty, Clive Hennigan, Mark Ronayne, Jason Connolly and Darren Connolly starred for the home side. Team: David Mitchell, Gerard McWalter, Brian Clarke, Anthony McLoughlin, Donnacha Geraghty, John Macken, Clive Hennigan (3-2), Mark Ronayne (0-1), Jason Connolly (0-3), Darren Connolly (1-3), Cathal Higgins, Andrew Peters (0-1), Sean Waldron. Sub used: Tommy Waldron (0-1).

The Intermediate team hosted Mayo Gaels in the O Mara Cup on Tuesday evening and won, 2-13 to 3-6 in a good open game. The sides were level, 1-4 apiece, at the break, and while Davitts always appeared to have the upper hand, they found the Gaels spirited challenge very difficult to overcome. The Davitts attack was very lively in this game, with Aidan McTigue in particular, in flying form. Others to shine for Davitts were goalie Paddy Kirrane, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, Pat Coyne, captain Paul Carey, Seamus Roche and Richie Kilkenny, who had a blinder when introduced in the second half.

It was very encouraging from a Davitts point of view to see a squad of 23 players togged out. We are already without the five travellers (Messers Conroy, Cummins, Healy, Moran and Prendergast, currently in hard training Down Under), have lost Ronan McNamara (cruciate) and Keith Glynn (groin) for the season, and have Frankie Barrett, Maurice Prendergast, David McDonagh, Fergal McGrath and Michael Ronayne all struggling to be fit for the championship clash with Belmullet.

Davitts team: Paddy Kirrane, Tommy Nolan, Kieran Kirrane, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke (0-2), Pat Coyne, Derek Mooney, Paul Carey (0-3), Shane Mitchell, Carlos O Gara (0-1), Seamus Roche (0-1), Colm Roche, Liam Kearns (0-1), Aidan McTigue (2-3), Keith Prendergast (0-1). Subs used: Noel Reapy, Richie Kilkenny (0-1), Tommy Mitchell and Martin Cosgrove.

U-14 v Ballinrobe – Division 3 League Semi-Final

U-14 v Ballinrobe - Division 3 League Semi-Final

The u-14 team qualified for the County Div 3 league final with a hard earned victory over a gallant Ballinrobe side, in Ballindine on Wednesday. Davitts had to withstand a late rally from the visitors, which yielded 2-3 without reply, to win this semi final by 5-10 to 4-8.

The games outstanding player was Davitts forward Tommy Waldron who terrorised the Ballinrobe defence all evening, seeing off a number of opponents, and ending up with a personal tally of 4-3. He got great support up front from Matthew Trench, Michael Clarke, Liam Noone, Cathal Hennelly and lively sub Gerard Griffin. Team captain Donal Ronayne had a tremendous game at midfield along with Thomas Charles. Goalkeeper Michael Mangan effected some brilliant saves, while William Freeley was excellent in defence, with Padraig Mangan, Liam Connolly, Shane Cummins, Jonathon Fahy and sub Jack Rodgers also defending well.

Well done to the management team of Martin Kearns, Tommy Ronayne, Liam Griffin and Joe Mangan, who have put in a huge effort with this team.
